Boy Scouts need a receiver

Trying to find a receiver that does AM/FM/SW and weather alerts. Needs to be small enough for backpacking. The Grundig 400 or SANGEAN DT-400W are the right size, but I am unable to find one that does it all in a small package. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Try the ETON emergency radios. They windup and I think use batteries. I'm not sure if they're too big but they have multiband coverage and I think weather alerts. Look on the Radio Shack website. Some of them are weatherproof. It might give them a general idea of shortwave. Be advised there's not much on shortwave these days. They've all went to the internet. Tim KD4RNC

OOP's maybe nada on weather alerts-sorry

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, the weather alerts are the tough part. Find it hard to believe that SOMEONE has not developed such a device!

I keep looking at different sites and one says the Eton 300 has NOAA and some don't mention it. So much for misinformation. I guess you just have to see one at Radio Shack. I've seen them there. I'm thinking about getting one myself for emergencies as a ham radio operator. We've been having weird weather here in E Tn.

"Looks like ICOM IC-R5 is what you are looking for. Not cheap though."

Wow! You aren't kidding! Who knew Scouting was going to be this expensive... :)

When I did a lot of hiking with the scouts I carried one of the small ICOM/Yaesu/Kenwood HT's with me. After about a mile away from the road, cell phone service went to h*** where I am. However, since I had my license, there was never anywhere I went with the scouts that I couldn't hit a mountaintop repeater. Came in useful when we were going to be ending up coming back a lot later than we thought. Getting liscened is not that difficult nowadays, so I would recommend that at least one member of the troop gets licensed.
