Just caught the tail end of a news story on Fox 26 that mentioned something to the effect that Brandi Garcia is out at the Box. Anyone have any details?

She was let go becasue she was playing some trae I do not know the whole details

The Houston Press also features the Trae/Box saga this week.

I have to say, if you're attempting to bury an artist or deny him publicity, this seems to be the absolute worst way to go about it.

Especially when it is screwing a person's career for playing Trae's music at a event that was NOT related to the station.

I don't listen to KBXX or hip hop, but the people that I know that do all seem to have the same opinion. KBXX is terrible, they don't support local hip hop anymore, they shouldn't have fired anyone, Nnete is an idiot and KBXX needs competition. I've also heard GT and Michael Watts have also been reprimanded and this wouldn't be the first time KBXX/Radio One has been accused of racial discrimination. I'm not pulling the race card, just mentioning things I've been hearing. So, how about some hip hop on 93.7 or 100.3? The timing would be perfect, KBXX is weak right now.

Brandi's video statement (may be NSFW):

I said it before and i'll say it again: If anyone should be fired from The Box, it should be Nnete who started the whole mess in the first place.

And djjfive is right about The Box. Generally, it's just not what it used to be anymore. As a matter of fact, I cant listen to The Box that much anymore. Stations I listen to more are Hot and Majic (for my R&B fix)... but mostly Hot. Otherwise, the iPhone.

And as for a new competitor for The Box, "sniff, sniff" I smell one hell of a selling opportunity for the radio companies.

Question: "If" CBS ever took that opportunity, wouldn't it help compliment Hot in some way?? Just thought about that, but wasn't sure.

I now see why everybody complains and hate Radio One. Houston needs major competition the Urban Hip-Hop radio dial!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe Radio One thinks hip hop is dying and they're trying to kill the station for a format change.

This is Radio One we are talking about. I don't see them going to such extremes like that anytime soon. And hip-hop may be down now, but it sure is not out, I can tell you that.

And can I get an answer on if CBS started a new urban station, would it benefit Hot in some way??

No, it would not. How the hell could it? If any radio group were to do such a thing, I wouldn't expect them to go head to head with the heritage "lifestyle" hip-hop station in town.

If there's a hole for another urban station, it would be one with a presentation that's more palatable to caucasians and 2nd and 3rd generation latinos. If there's a station in Houston that would stand to lose from such a station signing on, it would be Hot.

I was talking about from a billing point of view, but ratings-wise, you do have a point.

BINGO!!!! CBS has eaten Radio One's lunch in Atlanta, Charlotte, and Washington on a regular basis. Radio One's foolishness has left an opportunity to finish CBS's domination in the nation's largest urban markets outside of New York.

I think if CBS were to blow up 100.3 KILT. However, they would need to carefully format the station so it would cannibalize sister station, KKHH. It would have to be a full-service urban contemporary like WVEE in Atlanta, which rarely spins any rhythmic crossover songs unless they are considered a core urban charted single. Such a station could seriously eat into the billing of Radio One's urban cluster if it positioned itself properly as urban compliment of KKHH.

The fact that CBS only owns 3 urbans nationwide should tell everyone something about the likelihood of them signing one on here.

If they were going to blow something up, they would go after some of that KODA money. KBXX is short money by comparison, and urban is hard to sell in Texas.

Doubtful they will blow up KILT, that will leave COX with the only country station in the market. Best case if they ever try to take over the A/C format is to do something with KLOL. I hear KKHH is doing pretty well. I dont have access to numbers, just going by what I hear and read.

The fact that the last few AC stations CBS launched are getting crushed by their competitors in New York, DC and Chicago should tell everyone something about them signining on that format down here.

Why bother launching a station that would eventually get the same share that KILT, or MEGA is getting now?? Go where the REAL potential is at, where one station is already making poor choices that are making them weak, and just take the numbers.

Sorry to be the one to break this news to you, but these people don't flip stations for your personal amusement. They do it to make money!

First, even if CBS did flip something to urban, the odds of them taking down The Box are slim to none. The successful CBS urban stations were urban long before CBS owned them. If they're making money already, CBS is simply smart enough to not kill the golden goose. (A lesson some other radio companies could learn from.)

The successes of CBS urban properties being touted in this thread are a little thin too. Take a look at Atlanta. WVEE is a full market signal. The competitors (past and present) are all rimshots that fail to cover the entire market with a city grade signal. CBS wins there by default, not by design.

Real potential? What potential are you talking about? The potential for local business owners to tell your sales team they don't want "that crowd" in their stores? If you have access to Miller Kaplan, take a look at Radio One. Their money here in Houston is almost exclusively national/agency business. Urban simply doesn't sell locally in Texas.

Meanwhile, KODA is making big money. It's absolutely stupid the money Clear Channel is making with that signal. KODA is the market REVENUE leader, which paints a big, fat target on it.

I'm sure it would be much more entertaining for you personally Mr. Ric if CBS went urban, but it simply makes zero business sense. Fixing KILT or going AC would be much more profitable here than having an also ran, or even a dominant urban station.

Actually the best way to accomplish this would be to flip KLOL 101.1 to Jammin Hits KTJM would have done better in the ratings if it were on a strong signal, but hip hop or Urban well Cox did that in San Antonio with Power 106.7 and it failed. However if Cox programmed it like the now defeunct 106.7 Jamz or a short playlist like 106.9 the Point it is doom to fail.

Well, the difference between San Antonio and Houston is that Houston DMA actually has a decent size black population whereas San Antonio's practically is nonexistent. From my knowledge that station Cox had in SA was actually a rhythmic rather than an urban.
