Braves look to Brewer Broadcaster Jim Powell

Milwaukee Brewers broadcaster Jim Powell appears headed South. The Braves are likely to announce that Powell, who attended UGA, will return to Georgia to do play by play for the Atlanta Braves this Spring. Powell would succeed the retired Pete Van Wieren in the Braves Radio Booth. Since 1996 Powell has been working the nosebleed seats in Milwaukee alongside former Brave Bob Uecker.

Bob Uecker! What a fun guy! At least to listen to... I don't know a thing about him. He is to baseball what John Madden is to football.

This will probably be a highly transitional year for the Braves, between the loss of Skip Caray (RIP) and now John Smoltz and possibly Tom Glavine. A rebuilding year where we'd better just plan on looking ahead to 2010, but I hope I'm wrong!

In all honesty, it's probably a GOOD thing for the Braves to finally move on from the miracle years of the early 90s. They were awesome times, but none of the players and coaches of that era can recapture that. Sometimes legends can be a heavy weight around the neck. I'd hoped Glavine, Maddux and Smoltz would all retire at the same time so they'd become Hall of Fame eligible at the same time. Wouldn't it have been amazing to see all three go in together on the first ballot? We'll never know...

Jim is very good with The Brewers... He should be a good fit with The Braves... Man I am feeling old now, but I remember when Jim also did a sports talk show for The South Carolina News Network back in the late 80's and early 90's..... Man how time passes... CC1

Re: Braves Radio Broadcasters

The Braves will name their new radio broadcast team within days. The deal is nearly done. Let the ink dry and watch this space.

Chip will do some radio but primarily TV, including the TBS national games on Sunday afternoons. The radio team is _____ and _____. Expect an announcement from the Braves very soon.

I hope the Braves work something out with the Nationals, and Sutton returns. He is so insightful and knowledgeable, and obviously loves what he is doing. Sutton makes listening such a pleasure. I really never understood what caused him to leave.

The Braves can't be too thrilled that both their "flagship stations" are sinking. Of course, we all agree that WGST is all but gone - all that remains visible is Rush and the Braves. Still, the irony is that it was the "BravesRadio" debacle and the stupidly high rights fees CC/Hogan paid for them - with NO ratings boost in return - that proved to play a major role in the death of WGST.

It couldn't happen to a nicer guy! That little @!#@##@X Hogan has ruined more lives in radio than anyone in recent memory.
The only sad thing is that while he has put so many good people out of work, he sits on his San Antonio farm as a multi million dollar fat cat.
