Breakaway Broadcast v Stereo Tool Processing

Storm, you are quite correct - the newest version of ST does sound very good on voice - and it also really makes phone callers sound good too.

I'm committing the ultimate sin: I have Stereo Tool 6.21 in front of Sound Solution 1.31! I only use the Azmuth / Channel Delay, Stereo Image Processing (to ceter the bass), and the Multiband Compressor / Limiter set VERY slow on both attack and release .0001 attack and .00001 release. Everything else is defeated. Latency is 4096, Quality is High, and Pre Amp and Post Amp are both at 0db.

This I feed into Stereo Solution using my "secret sauce" which gives me a very dense, punchy sound reminiscent of the 80s CHRs trying to eek out every last db of volume on their signals. In comparison, I'm not THAT loud; this wouldn't be that competitive on the air unless you put some sort of distortion-canceled clipping after Sound Solution... but for texture, I feel like I've gotten pretty close to "that 80s sound," and the gentle re-eqing of Stereo Tool prevents a lot of the "hole punching" that used to happen (even though SS is a multiband processor!).

I DID have to roll off the highs a bit more in Sound Solution, though... Stereo Tool brightened things up a bit, even as it warmed up the bass...

This link will let you download audio of (among others) Breakaway Broadcast, the Omnia 9, and Stereo Tool all taking on the same audio challenge. I found I prefered the sound of Breakaway Broadcast to the Omnia 9 (a close second) but of course settings can make all the difference in these things:

I was MOST impressed that Stereo Tool could hold its own against the "big boys" and, while the tiniest bit "dirtier" than the others, it was able to get equally loud without being irritatingly distorted. (I'd love to know what settings they were using here!)

For any kind of broadcast use, Sound Solution is indeed the ultimate sin. It has terrible clippers -- non-anti-aliased running at 44.1 kHz, whereas any hardware digital processor runs its clippers at 256 kHz or higher, to keep the digital grunge out of the audio.
