It's certainly not the worst I've heard -- especially considering the price -- but I have not heard this problem at all with Breakaway. In fact, I'd say Breakaway is easily able to match the 8100's elegance at handling HF transients. With a lighter preset like "CGSmooth" or "Reference", the HF restriction due to pre-emphasis becomes virtually inaudible, even at 75 uS.
As he wrote on his blog, Goran Tomas did a lot to improve the sound of the DSPX-mini, but at least as of the firmware available last summer when I was able to give it a close listen, it still has problems with HF ducking and "pinching" on sibilants.
