Breaking: And Now.....Heeereeeeee's Jimmy!

The New York Times reported this afternoon (April 3rd) that Jimmy Fallon will officially replace Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show".

The Times story says Fallon will take over right after the Winter Olympics end in late February, and that "Tonight" will move back to New York, so Fallon and his staff won't have to relocate.

Link to the New York Times story, written by Bill Carter (perhaps the leading expert on the history of late-night network TV):

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/04/business/media/nbc-confirms-fallon-will-succeed-leno.html .

NBC also confirmed the story; NBC News also has posted the story at:

http://theclicker.today.com/_news/2...acing-jay-leon-on-tonight-show-in-spring-2014 .

(by the way, this link will get you to the NBC story. The link misspells Leno's last name)

What will Jay Leno do next?? Certainly not a five-nights-a-week talk/variety show at 10 P.M. ET/PT!

However, NBC could do what they should have done back in 2009: Give Jay a one-hour, once-a-week big-budget comedy/variety series in the traditional comedy/variety format. If anyone could bring back the traditional comedy/variety show, it would be Jay Leno.

The hourglass may finally be running out for "Days Of Our Lives" as well. It's no secret NBC wants to put their Burbank property on the market sooner than later.

If that happens, "Days" (which is not produced by the network) can lease a studio elsewhere in the area.

However, I think the Burbank lot may well remain a TV and/or film production facility.

A sidelight:

On today's (April 3rd) 2 P.M. EDT CBS Radio hourly newscast, the anchor (Pam Coulter) accidentally said that "The 'Today Show' will be getting a new host" before playing a story from correspondent Steve Fudderman about the Leno-to-Fallon transition.

For a second, I thought that NBC was also going to announce that Matt Lauer was leaving "Today" on the same day!

Fudderman's report, by the way, had the Johnny Carson-era "Tonight" theme music in the background.

NBC has now issued a press release on Jay Leno's departure and Jimmy Fallon's promotion:

http://www.nbcumv.com/mediavillage/...eleases/2013/04/03/jaylenoannounce1292972.xml .

"Leno has hosted “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” since taking over the reins from television icon Johnny Carson in 1992."

Talk about a convenient whitewashing. There WAS the small matter of that tall, lanky guy with the cowlick ... right?

I know NBC wants to pretend as if the Conan chapter was all a bad dream, but some viewers do pay attention.

I wonder why Pam Coulter did not apologize for the error during the newscast?

Because not everyone lives up to your asinine standards?

I don't think so. Consider that the format has been off regular series network TV for over a generation. The people who might remember the format are Jay's age. To revive an older concept, you really need a much younger host.

I think Jay's future TV plans have already been spelled out in his contract. He knew his return was going to be short-lived, which is why he didn't put a whole lot more into it. He has more money than he'll ever need, and he will keep himself busy by getting a regular show in Las Vegas.

DOOL has been renewed through September 2014. The property/complex was sold in 2008 and has been leased by NBC and Corday Productions ever since. DOOL is not owned by NBC. It's owned by Corday Productions and Sony.

FYI, DOOL currently films 3-4 months in advance, so if NBC does not renew for the 50th season, filming would likely stop in May 2014.

OK, what are you all's (you all's ???) predictions?

Will Letterman move to #1 or Kimmel or Fallon?

Fallon will be an automatic #1 through the May sweeps of 2014. That's a given. It will be up to him to keep it. Kimmel will be tough competition because he will be the only network offering at 11:35 broadcasting from Hollywood.

I predict that Letterman will hang on at least through the end of 2014, and that he retires during the May sweeps of 2015. Despite what all of the prognosticators say, Craig Ferguson will inherit the "Late Show" and broadcast it from Television City in Hollywood.

Will CBS and ABC run Capital One commercials, that feature Jimmy Fallon, between 11:35PM-1:37AM Weeknights?

I think they probably will. Celebrities from other networks appear in commercials all the time. If networks didn't accept those ads, or limited them to certain hours, they'd be missing out on revenue.

And realistically - if you prefer Kimmel, Conan, or Letterman - what's the chance you'd tune over to NBC just because you saw Fallon in a commercial?

No doubt, The Tonight Show will get a ratings bump the first few nights because people will be curious, but most will return to their favorites.

Oh, I dunno... I think NBC (or somebody) should sign Leno up to do an Americanized version of "Sabado Gigante". 3 hours on Saturday nite. He'd be perfect (and I say that as someone who doesn't care much for him) and his fans would eat it up with a spoon.

Just as NBC wants us to all believe that Jack Paar took over "The Tonight Show" immediately after Steve Allen left in 1957.

Wrong!

After Allen left, NBC replaced "Tonight" with something called "America After Dark", which was what "The Today Show" would be like if it were broadcast at 11:30 P.M.

The show was hosted by "Today" veteran Jack Lescoulie, but the ratings dropped and many NBC stations (including then-NBC affiliate WBZ-4 in Boston) dropped the show.

The show was cancelled in June, effective late in July (since it took time for Paar and his producers to get their version of "Tonight" started). Lescoulie was moved back to "Today" at the time the cancellation was announced and New York radio DJ Al "Jazzbo" Collins filled-in as host until such time as Paar was ready.

Agreed. I'm 61, and the vast majority of variety shows were gone before I hit 18...I guess Sonny & Cher and Carol Burnett were exceptions. But Burnett's show was mostly comedy.

And what can Leno do other than comedy? Sonny & Cher could do comedy and sing (if you overlook that Sonny could barely carry a tune), Dean Martin did both, the Smothers Brothers did both, etc.

And even at my advanced age, I never much liked variety shows outside of the comedy. For example, I prefered Carol Burnett's show in reruns much more - chopped into half-hour segments that were all comedy.

And most viewers 40 and under have probably never seen a variety show, outside of some retrospective Ed Sullivan clips. Talk shows are the modern equivalent of variety shows: comedy, singing and dancing...and interviews.

"Jimmy's guest hosts tonight are the Capital One Vikings, or Visigoths, or whatever they're supposed to be."

I like how NBC is spinning this. They said that Leno took over for Johnny Carson when his ratings were still high. Half way true. Johnny announced his retirement, on his own, a year prior to going off the air.

In this scenario, NBC told Jay Leno he was out. No announced retirement, just kicked to the curb.

Johnny left on his terms!
