Breaking: CBS has fired Imus

Here comes the Michael Graham morning show, maybe...

>>Just came over the wires...CBS has fired Imus.

Mentioned by Howie. The dirge music is playing

Not surprised at all...I wonder if they will still have Barnicle filling in on the (Host Now Gone) In The Morning
Show...?
Bring on Dennis Miller, WTKK! Move Grahamcrackers to mornings.

Wonder if Imus will try to take his show elsewhere, even perhaps to Air America 2.0? He has heavy
baggage though.

JUST HEARD THE GREAT NEWS ABOUT IMUS GETTING THE BOOT!! ;D ;D ;D :D
GOOD RIDDANCE TO BAD TRASH.... ( SERVERIN NEEDS TO BE TOSSED IN THAT TRASH BIN ALONG WITH THAT IGNORANT FOSSIL....

Air America? Imus may be arguably liberal (and that's a real argument) but I think he's insulted too many minorities over the years to be accepted at a "progressive" entity like Air America.

Plus, I don't think anywhere would take him at the moment. He's so radioactive (pun intended) that sponsors were dropping him left and right...which is a truly deadly blow to any radio personality. I read that he was only pulling in about $15 million a year for CBS...not chump change, but nor was it all that impressive given how long he'd been on the air, his market penetration and established fan base. Figure his earning power is, at best, about half that $15mil now that he's wearing the scarlet pink slip. It'll drop by another 10% for every week he's off the air. If nobody steps up to claim Imus by this time next week, it's probably safe to say we've seen the end of the I-man era on radio.

A shame, really. I listened to Imus growing up in the 80's and 90's and I used to chuckle quite a bit. But even then I noticed him starting to slip. Nowadays Imus in the Morning is a sad shell of of its former self and I'm not sorry to see it go; makes a little more room for someone else to get a chance.

"Wonder if Imus will try to take his show elsewhere"?

People have incredibly short attention-spans, and are intellectually lazy. Many could give a damn about today's news; Imus, Iraq, Duke Lacrosse.

Money, Pamela Anderson's chest, beer.....yeah, that's important in America today.

Okay; so some big advertisers decamped. Money talks + outrage = sleeping in for the I-Man.

On the other hamd, DI is so "hot" right now - how marketable is spin? Imus on XMSirius?

Should be a great press conference when Donny chooses to have one in the near future.

Stand by for retaliatory broadsides against Rev. Al Sharpton (Tawana Braley, Crown Hts. riots in NYC); when does Rev. Al apologise to the Duke Lacrosse team?

No moral aquivalency here - Imus and Sharpton have some 'splaining to do. I'm just stating some historical facts you'll be hearing soon on a media outlet near you!

I'll be the one person to stand up call call bullsh*t.

We all know why he's gone. And it has nothing to do with what he said. It's how he handled himself afterwards. He displayed the bitterness, and insensitivity that brought this to an unavoidable end.

What Imus said was not racist. It was certainly sexist. And it cost him his job not because of the content of his show, but because too much money came off the books as a result of pressure. Money is the lifeblood of society, and if CBS and MSNBC could still profit from his failing show, they certainly would've taken the heat. Imus is gone because he's no longer able to generate revenue greater than expense. That's it. Calling it anything else is simply viewing this through rose-colered glasses.

Al Sharpton & Jesse Jackson have both made racially insensitive statements. The difference is, they remained apologetic. Sincerely, or not. Imus signed his termination papers with his "I've apologized enough" statement this morning. Apologies mean nothing. It is the political agenda that must be met. Every time. Imus put a limit on how much he would take, and then went out on his shield. I'm not saying it's right. I'm saying he refused to grovel. And it cost him. It doesn't harm him at all...he's got f-you money anyway. He'll truck off to Arizona and live out his remaining years as the bitter old man he is today.

Shame on America for buying into this crap. This incident ensures that the fires of racism remain sufficiently fueled. There are those who will use this event to blame Black America for using their skin pigment for preferential treatment. Which will keep that wheel turning in a never-ending cycle of stupidity, and ignorance. And White America needs to stop blaming others for their own ignorance as well. I only use skin pigment in this because that's apparently where the media has chosen to draw this line.

Sharpton & Jackson need to take a good look at who made the phrase "nappy headed ho's" commonplace in America to the point of an over-the-hill broadcaster using it in a futile attempt to sound hip and relevant in 2007. Take a good look at "Hip Hop Culture." It is that diversity that's so often "celebrated" that made words like "ho" an alleged acceptable part of the American lexicon. Take a gander at the top of the music, or movie charts, and tell America why "Barbershop" isn't racist, or why it's OK for certain artists to denigrate races, and sexes? The mirror sometimes shows a truly ugly face.

America is supposed to accept certain facets of ethnic cultures, but not to the point of true equality. If you look deep inside, you'll find this to be fact. When "we" (Americans) use certain words or phrases "they" (Americans trying to segregate under the guise of "it's our culture"...and this applies to every culture.) say it's wrong. But if "we" ignore those same cultural traits and attempt to consider all Americans equal, "they" claim we're insensitive to individuality.
Are we a melting pot, or not?

I believe it was Bob Grant who said (paraphrasing): "This country will not stop using race as a litmus test, until this country stops using race as a litmus test."

The radiothon will go on tomorrow with Charles McCord and Mrs. (Deirdre) Imus co-hosting.

From WTKK's site, GM's Phil Redo and Peter Smythe say they respect CBS' decision.
"Don Imus has been a part of WTKK since our launch in 1999 and has many fans. We want to acknowledge his many positive contributions to radio and charitable causes.
We have not made any decision about a replacement for Imus and will be reviewing all our options in the coming weeks."

i agree with paul here. mr. procter didn't want to gamble and the general made the call on this one.

The secret here, as we've found out, is the 'victimization' that must act as a catalyst for all that follows. If you can play the 'victim' card; that is, wail and whine about how much of an 'injustice' has been done due to comments made by someone else (even though said 'victimization' is just a charade), you can move mountains.

Now that we know the recipe, we can all become 'victims' whenever we feel the need!

What a country!

Chris

WTKK update via Boston Radio Watch: Jimmy Myers will be filling Barnicle's 9-10 am hour for the period of time
that Barnicle is filling in for the former W1 host D. Imus...also Myers will fill in for the tape-delayed Bill
OhReally 7-9 pm tonight and tomorrow night

I've been looking at profile pictures of Don Imus and I really think he could gain employment as our new 'Old Man of the Mountain' here in New Hampshire. That chisled chin, the jut-jaw, the scowl.

The hat must go, though. And additional weight may send his head tumbling to the valley below. We've already lost the 'real' landmark; we can't afford to lose the replacement ;D

Chris

I'm glad he's gone, his style of "put-down humor" turned me off years ago. Bernie McGurk is a rabid bigot, no loss there, IMO. I agree he handled himself poorly afterwards with the "you people" quote to Sharpton. A classic dolt. Stay tuned for the fallout.

best post you've ever done... congrats.

No one wins here.... Imus, his crew, CBS, MSNBC, frequent guests, listeners.... all lose out. And it's another loss for terestrial radio. If you're a fan of radio, no reason to celebrate over this move. However, if this incident actually results in a movement that brings about real change, than I'll be the first to say this was a good thing. But, I doubt that will happen.

Very glad to hear Jimmy Meyers tonight (Thursday) on 96.9.
The Imus firing is chilling.
Worst thing he could have done is go on Sharpton's show, and legitimize that clown.
Does anyone remember Tawana Brawley and the Sharpton incident 20 years ago?
Imus' and his producer's comments were poor choices. The reaction by sponsors and so-called "spokesmen" was overblown, IMO.
The industry has lost its nads. Be afraid, people, and watch very carefully what you say on air.

overblown? maybe, but the big business is very sensitive about associating itself with fallen media stars. the general running its ads during imus show would be comparable to hertz hiring oj back to be their spokesperson on tv commercials.

All I can hope for is someone interesting to keep me entertained on the commute like Stern did in his heyday. Dopey and Anthony are boring, the Felon isn't holding my attention and D&C talk too much about anything but sports.
