Breaking: DENTON OUT AT NBC 3!

Breaking News: Allen Denton Out At NBC 3! confirmed it on the chatroom with Aguirre. :'( no named replacments however Tom Sinkovitz is rumored to be replacing him.

I've heard it from numerous people in the industry and on this board, not to mention, mentioend on KNBR. But he is still on.

If he knew he was going to be canned, why would he still be on? If the station was going to can him, why during sweeps? And why replace him in the middle of it?

Re: Breaking: DENTON OUT AT NBC 11!

Allen Denton, KNTV's lead news anchor, will leave the station November 30. A station spokeswoman said today that KNTV has not yet found a replacement. Lisa Kim will continue to anchor the primary newscasts. Jessica Aguirre, who joined KNTV after KGO , will be expanded.

The station also said, Shannon O'Donnell, KNTV's morning weather person for the past six years, will also be leaving on Nov. 30.

this is really sad! Shannon (hot :D) and Allen are some of the best in the biz! i guess this has to do with NBC 2.0 and HD conversion in 2008

Maybe I'm missing something, but what would changing anchors have to do with HD conversion?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Denton was brought in when KNTV was still owned by Granite, possibly while the station was still independent. He never anchored in the Bay Area before. NBC bought the station and canned Terilyn Joe - she was well know locally, but not in a good way - she was a liability with the negative publicity she brought in. NBC 11 has never had high ratings with Denton at the helm. His on-air manner reminds me of 1970s anchors (Van Amburg, George Reading, John and Judd Hambrick, etc). The Bay Area moved past that years ago with more three-dimensional anchors like Pete Wilson, Dave McElhatton, and others.

I assume that NBC decided it was time to go with somebody like that, and probably somebody well known locally. Sinkovitz? Maybe...

"HD Costs mucho dinero/Denton Costs alot too"

OK - thanks for the explanation Newsradiofan. I believe you...so pardon what I guess is a rhetorical question, but why would Granite pay big money to bring a (then) unknown anchor into the San Francisco from a smaller market...Cincinnati, or wherever? And why would NBC have continued to pay big money this long?

Other stations did that sometimes in the 70s and 80s in the Bay Area - remember Sylvia Chase? She was arguably a "star" from ABC and 20/20. KRON changed anchors constantly in those days (70s - 80s) without any effect on the ratings - they were usually #3, and Chase didn't improve things. KRON finally got decent ratings when they hired Pete Wilson, who was well-known, and well liked from his time on Channel 7. A few years before, when KGO-TV had brought in a then unknown Pete Wilson, they paid Pete a fraction of what they had been paying Van Amburg. That's a bit different.

I had assumed that the networks abandoned that kind of big spending years ago, since it rarely got results.

What about NBC 11? Will he still be on the air there?
NBC3 was just a moniker for cable. Same channel. Granite spent millions on promos. But people in the north bay confused KNTV with KCRA ch 3 in Sacramento.

Do you mean KCRA-3 or another NBC station?

KCRA has never ID'd as "NBC3", not on the air, not even online.

Also, for future reference please turn off Caps Lock and remove the exclamation points when posting a thread title.

"Ahh but KNTV use to for its cable channel which if you read the posts you would have found out. And who made you state nanny?"

Just to put an end to this tussle - KNTV changed it's "brand" to "NBC3" when it first became the NBC affiliate, thinking it was better to be identified with their cable location, rather than their over the air broadcast channel. Most people these days have cable or satellite, so this probably made sense. About a year later, they suddenly changed to "NBC11." The explanation for this that KNTV posted on their own website was exactly what an earlier poster said - confusion in the North Bay between KCRA and KNTV. Whether or not KCRA was billed as NBC3, it still used "3" (their broadcast channel) in their branding and their logo, so there was some confusion.

No, KIFR - the photo of a smiling Lisa and Allen still graces the NBC11 website. Apparently, it is true that Denton is leaving at the end of the month, as reported a couple of weeks ago by the Mercury News and others, but there have been no updates. I think somebody else started the Sinkovitz speculation. KNTV only stated that no replacement has been found yet.

I read where Allen's son Stephen is a meteorologist at Channel 19, WHNT Huntsville, Alabama. Supposedly, the father is moving back east to be closer to family.
