Breaking: ESPN 24/7 on 850 Oct 5

Are there any coverage holes for the Red Sox created by this move? Any places where 850 is the only Red Sox affiliate with a usable signal?

I'll listen to ESPN for baseball playoffs, that's for sure. Some games like WS may be on 93.7 too.

As for coverage holes, I'm not sure. Some here say certain areas have trouble picking up
93.7, 103.7, etc. and 850 works fine for them, which won't be an option anymore for Sox,
talk, etc. Mark of Bos Radio Watch feels that all areas are covered though. In a tweet to me:

>>After more than a year on FM, SportsRadio 93-7 is enough of (an) identity. They are putting AM to work instead of useless duplication

(I was pointing out how 850 is being pitched as "ESPN on WEEI")

Not totally accurate but compare the maps

850 days http://radio-locator.com/pats/WEEI_AM_LD.gif
850 nights http://radio-locator.com/pats/WEEI_AM_LN.gif

93.7 http://radio-locator.com/pats/WEEI_FM_LU.gif

103.7 http://radio-locator.com/pats/WVEI_FM_LU.gif

1440 days http://radio-locator.com/pats/WVEI_AM_LD.gif
1440 nights http://radio-locator.com/pats/WVEI_AM_LN.gif

and then there's 96.3 on the Cape

Fenway Park on cheap portable radios?

Nova Scotia? I know they have gotten calls from there in the past.

Do we have enough hispanics for ESPN deportes? If we do, could they all be reached by one of those smaller AMs?

"Hispanics" is misleading. ESPN Deportes programming appeals primarily to Hispanic audiences of Mexican and Central American descent. Boston's Hispanic population is overwhelmingly from Caribbean countries. Even though Boston is a big sports market, ESPN Deportes would be going after such a small segment of the audience that its success would be very doubtful.

ESPN Deportes needed to be in New York not only because its Hispanic population is noticibly more diverse, but also because it is such a large Hispanic market (#2!). Relatively speaking, Boston is not a very large Hispanic market... at the moment, I live in DMA #87, yet this is the 10th largest Hispanic market (and still doesn't have ESPN Deportes).

This is something we here on the East Coast tend to forget: The largest Hispanic demographic in this country is Mexican and Mexican-American. The culture, music and sports scene in Mexico are far different from those of Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Cuba. ESPN Deportes emphasizes soccer, which has eclipsed baseball in Mexico but is still a distant second in Cuba and the Dominican. (Puerto Rico seems to have more interest in basketball these days than either baseball or soccer.) This difference has been lost on New York-centric Sirius XM, which has only one "Hispanic" music channel, which plays music associated with the Caribbean and the East Coast of the U.S. exclusively.

New Fybush column says Sox exclusively on 93.7 next year which may result in complaints from those in Back Bay and Newton/Needham who have cheap radios and will find a bunch of signals overloading to make 93.7 recep difficult

I suspect they will monitor the situation with the Celtics and adjust as needed.

Overflows will be on 850 meaning Howie has to work. :)

Maybe not too many conflicts but maybe Cs to 850 or possible 680 on wknds...btw 1510 running yahoo now late aft not Santos progtalk

How does Entercom handle conflicts in Rhode Island? (WVEI-FM)

During the NBA playoffs they've put Sox on 95.5 and Celtics on 103.7. Given that 103.7's signal is still pretty good in southeastern Connecticut and 95.5's isn't so much, that leaves something to be desired.

I wonder if they will make any announcements about this beforehand. Maybe not. Perhaps a few
quick mentions on sports flash around Thu.
What I think will happen: at midnight on Thu into Fri. 850 and 93.7 both go into ESPN overnight.
Basically it will be the end of local talk, etc on 850 (but you never know) with Mike and Mike--
live from Gillette Stadium I think?--debuting in the morning.

I can imagine occasional liners (by Cutler or Gustin): "If you want Dennis & Callahan (etc) tune to 93.7, WEEI-FM. THIS is AM 850, ESPN on WEEI!" Maybe during D&C that morning they will simulcast for a mini-segment--have 93.7 pick up Mike and Mike and maybe John & Gerry banter about the new situation.
But to be honest other than the original announcement of ESPN on 850, and the date revealed,
they aren't really mentioning this. Most people prob. know by now that WEEI's local stuff is on 93.7 and the other stations in western MA, RI, Cape etc. They can figure it out.

Mark of BRW reminded me they have Thu Night Football from Dial Global. That may go a little past midnight, then both the AM and FM switch to ESPN for overnight and the FM breaks away for
D&C, etc. in the morning. Mark also guessed that specialty shows like NASCAR, fishing, etc. could well show up on 850. (Make some money! brokered time)

Wolfe says the 850 will get Ent. the opportunity to do such things as NASCAR, golf show,
even a sports business show. Most listeners have gone to the FM but the AM signal is
still pretty substantial

>>I'm talking about long form specialty programming I can sell, that I wouldn't necessarily create on 93.7. A golf show, a sports business show, a NASCAR show are among the ideas we're kicking around. The vast majority of our audience has made the move to FM. That was expected given the landscape in the market. But 850 is still a huge signal and given the audience shift, it makes sense to make this move now to take advantage of that signal and of our ability to drive more dollars for the company.

850 is playing a loop telling people to switch over to FM. Anybody know when it started or will end?

Loop started at 6 AM and will continue for 24 hours. ESPN's Mike & Mike will air from Foxborough tomorrow starting at 6 AM.

Some unhappy campers on the WEEI facebook, people who say they can't get 93.7 for example (woman who works at Logan, 850 is fine...). One person wondered why 93.7 is in mono. I explained a distant FM signal can get less drift, etc. in mono instead of stereo. I explained why they moved to FM, and why they're switching the AM to all ESPN. There may be some areas where 93.7 doesn't come in too well but they're covering most everybody somehow. WEEI's facebook maintainer mentioned the phone apps, and the Maine stations for those up in the Pine Tree state who had gotten it on 850 before. Those in the Maritimes may well be out of luck though.
