BREAKING: MY 102.5 FLIPS

MarkSC said:
Spring is out today. They fell from 3rd to 8th 12+....so the good book was the fluke. Guess they had little to lose.
That has got to be their worst book in 2 years. One of the best books for WSSL in quite a while.

I'm starting to question whether the new My is a true Hot AC. They aren't programming from the Hot AC chart but the rest of the playlist is very Hot AC'ish (if you exclude those odd 70s songs that pop up occasionally).

i think there are a number of people who like newer music that the two ac stations weren't playing, but didn't want rap and still love baby james. interesting move that will play out in january merry christmas

I can't speak about the Baby James part, but I do agree that there are a lot of songs this market has been missing out on because they were too "adult" to get much attention from B and didn't chart high enough on AC for Magic or My

I'm trying to figure out....where did WMYI go wrong with mainstream AC? How on earth did WSPA become "the" mainstream AC? I honestly don't think they did anything better than WMYI. Sloppy automation, sub-par playlist, slow on new music, questionable moves. Since Bo Griffin, it seemed like they became an afterthought to Entercom. Until the past couple of years, they lagged behind 102.5 significantly, if I recall.

i figure as the room ages the opinion of the posters age. is the traditional ac format still viable for roadcast radio?

apparently it is for stations like WBEB, WLTW, KOST, and KODA. It does well in a lot of PPM markets. I never could figure out how Greenville was able to sustain two mainstream AC stations, though. I figured one would cave, but not the one that did.

It's OK to like whatever it is that you like, but neither of this market's two AC stations was being Programmed correctly. That is why they both were loosing their ASSES!
They listened to the record labels or some "Boob" Consultant instead of flying their own plane, and look where it got them...Failure! On a National basis, AC format stations crippled themselves with short, shallow, "Burnt" playlists, that were riddled with worthless Country-crossover records,...and thus, the end result. I predicted two years ago that one of them would..."Wake UP"! MY woke up...nothing caved in!!
Sure it was a format flip, but that bold move was just what the doctor ordered. MAGIC can also get on their feet, but they will need to hire someone...because no one there knows how. Radio is a business, and MY is now...Open For Business!

I don't think Magic has to do much now since they are the only AC, but they could certainly improve. They just got a good chunk of the 102.5 listeners that probably don't like the new format, but then again, Magic may lose some listeners that like the new format on 102.5. Magic plays older songs that nobody else plays in this market. Agree that both were poorly programmed AC's.

Neither of them had a good sound in the last few months. 98.9 is the best IMO, because it has better local personalities. They defeated 102.5 because they had the better morning show, more life in the community, and because of the better signal.

Nobody can dispute 98.9 has a better signal than 102.5. While MYI has trouble penetrating Greenville and Spartanburg, and is weak in the outer areas, 98.9 can be heard anywhere in SC west of I-77, and is the AC that can be heard strong in towns like Clinton and Laurens. WMYI can't.

If WMYI is active on their CP, they'll get out almost as far as 92.5 from that same tower near Caesars Head.
Though from their current location they have a stronger signal in Asheville than 98.9 (and in some parts the 97.7 translator).
I haven't had bad experiences with WMYI's signal until I go past Gaffney on I-85 north, cross into Laurens County on I-26 south,
or about to enter Georgia on I-85 south. Most of the focus (main population area) of the Upstate is covered ok.
I lived in the Mauldin / Simpsonville area for a few months last year and WMYI was clear as a bell there.
There have also been many times I could hear 102.5 in many parts of Charlotte, and going west of Gastonia it becomes more reliable.

The 98.9 signal is one of the strongest in the state. On a good day, I can get it easily in to Columbia and almost to Augusta as well as Charlotte. I'm not extremely familiar with the 102.5, but it can start to have static in Laurens county, plus that bad hole it has in Greenville.

I wish they would ditch Delilah. Absolutely horrid and does not fit with the rest of the station. We will probably be stuck with her until has 6 affiliates and does her last show.

When it comes to MY 102's spects, there are a lot more learn-ned than I. However, I do know that they are not a "Big Stick", 100,000 watt-er! When they were owned by Amcom, in their third year in business, they had a 23-share in the GSP market. That's a license to print money, and the present owners are trying to renew that document! Their new format skews female. So, guys let's not get pissssst-ed off...yet*(*that's southern for pending) Maybe another FM will "Wake the hell up!"...and serve us.

Regarding the signal, I used to hear it around Lexington when they first signed on. I called the 800 number and talked to someone, saying I was the one from the Lexington area, and was told they had actually heard from several people in the Lexington area.

Ever since WIOZ in Southern Pines moved from 106.9 to 102.5, I guess the chances of picking up the signal that far east are les than they were.

It looks like Magic 98.9 has reacted to the change, maybe. They have started playing less older music and I hear very little 70s for an AC, especially being the only mainstream.
I thought they would have gone the other way.

This market sure is screwed when it comes to older music. Clear Channel should throw something canned that plays classic hits on 96.7, for crying out loud! Premium Choice, automated, anything...heck, if they want to do satellite, hook up to True Oldies or something and replace that crap currently on there!

103.3 plays oldies at least part of the time, don't they?
Every time I turn them on I hear something different. I hear older music sometimes, but a lot of it's unfamiliar (only time I can get them well is in the car, due to WRIX).

If you like classic hits, here are times you can find them on Carolina's Classic 103.3 WOLT:

Monday - Friday
9am-10am
6pm - 60's at 6
7pm- 70's at 7
8pm - Midnight -6am

Saturday
Midnight - 8am
2pm-7pm

Sunday
Midnight - 6am

If you're interested enough to see what else we air and when it's on go to www.wolt-fm.com. LIVE streaming is also available there as well.

There's bluegrasss, blues, classic country, beach oldies, centered political talk, reggae and more.
And, coming 8/26 - Dorman High School Football. We also originate the Furman Sports Network as the flagship.

If you were unable to get the station before (within it's expected coverage area) - you should be able to now. New
transmitter running at full power and other new additions make for a great audio chain when in classic hits mode. All classic
hits are from TM's no noise remastered digital library in uncompressed wav. Other brokers tend to play mp3's so quality then is what is put into it.

I stumbled upon the 70s at 7 the other night. Very good sound. Congrats on the new equip. I'm guessing you replaced the original....probably around 20 years old? Too bad 103.3 can't carry the classic hits format 24/7, but hey, that's brokered radio. :) Country Earl is a legend!

I think I need to correct the original post I made on this thread....WMYI isn't truly "Hot AC." While the playlist is Hot AC sounding (especially the 80s, 90s, and 2000s-recurrent), the currents they play are AC currents from the AC chart, definitely not Hot AC. It's like they want to be Hot AC in every aspect except for current songs. Too few are played (just two an hour) and the spins are too low. The closest station I can think of to them is Fresh 102.7 in NYC.
