BREAKING: MY 102.5 FLIPS

I can see people tuning into Christmas music every once in a while to "get in the spirit", but even my kids don't want to hear it constantly. And I really don't see how anyone could listen to it from mid-November thru the holidays. Frankly, I'd go insane after just a few hours.

Only time I put Christmas music on is putting up the tree and Christmas morning....that's enough for me.

On another note, MY continues to improve from what I've listened to. Heard The Cure, The Killers and Florence and the Machine within a six-song span. While that might not be "edgy" in other cities, it's good to hear around these parts.

MY 102.5 has added "Pumped Up Kicks" - possibly the boldest add since this format started! I rarely even hear that song on B93.7. Awesome!

They are definitely improving!

MY is now running Clear Channel's national Hot AC format in late night hours at least, beginning tonight. They're starting to push the Premium Choice programming more on the smaller market stations, there's a national jock on it. Sample:

Coldplay - Paradise
Daughtry - Home
Killers - Mr. Brightside
Fray - Heartbeat
Avril Lavigne - I'm With You
Train - Hey, Soul Sister
Dead Or Alive - You Spin Me 'Round
Demi Lovato - Skyscraper
Creed - Arms Wide Open
Taio Cruz - Dynamite
John Mayer - Your Body Is A Wonderland
P!nk - Raise Your Glass
Matchbox 20 - If You're Gone
Colbie Caillat - Brighter Than The Sun

I doubt they'll use PC all of the time, but I wonder if they'll do any adjusting to the rest of the station to sound more like it.

If only they would use it during the early evening hours (um, 7-11 p.m.), I'd be happy. Still can't stand being out running errands and having to switch the channel at 7 as Delilah comes on board.

I wonder how many people actually listen to her that listen to the rest of the station. The two don't go together. I have a hard time believing many people listen to 102.5 just for her show.

It looks like the national playlist is quite good - they played Stanid, Oasis, Stone Temple Pilots, Theory of a Deadman, Cobra Starship, etc - alongside the stuff MY has been playing, but with more "new" stuff that they haven't added yet.

Oh forgot to mention that yeah, I was surprised to hear "Pumped Up Kicks" over the weekend myself. And they FINALLY started playing "Good Life" after how many weeks it's been on the Hot AC charts.

i think premium choice is a general term for cc's national jocks. they probably have a premium choice for all of their formats and are laying off local people to make that pay off for them

Premium Choice is the name they use for their national formats/playlists. WMYI uses the Hot AC one from 12m-5a. It's been around for several years but they're pushing it more with the recent cuts. Some stations use the PC playlists but have local jocks. As far as I can know, this is the first time any of the Clear Channel Greenville stations have used it.

Locally, MY's sound continues to improve with the exception of Delilah. The music is improving.

I found it odd that as their music playlist continues to improve (I rarely ever even hear a song from the 70s now) that they've been changing their promos to almost sound like an excuse for what they were playing early in the format change.

Now, I hear things like "What's Fresh mean to you?" then someone says "It's old music and new music. A mix."

That wasn't the message early on during the flip. It was just "fresh" and "new" then a little bit of a mess as they tried to mix in slower '70s songs with their Hot AC playlist. And when I listened it was often that '70s slop right AFTER the "fresh" promo.

Now, they seem to be almost entirely Hot AC and the new promos seem out of place. Whatever... just glad they seem to be improving music wise.

Yeah, I heard one of those as well. The mix has really improved- the 70s tracks are pretty much history and I don't think they play as many sleepy 80s songs. The current songs are more up to date, also. The only thing I would like is a little more new stuff, like they run in the late night hours.

I'd call them conservative hot AC if they didn't have Delilah. Her show is just so disconnected from the rest of the station. They are "fresh" compared to Magic - I heard a DJ there say "Secrets" was 'new music!'

Sounds like the time I heard a DJ refer to "Lite 102.9" just before "Separate Ways" by Journey.

I find both Magic and My way too consulted. The playlist gives local PD's no room for what "works in Greenville." I consult a number of stations and the PD's in the markets have a big say in whats played does not seem that way at all here.

magic and my are way too consulted, but you consult. nice.

Overall, MY has sounded better over the last few weeks particularly with new adds, like Kelly Clarkson's "Mr. Know It All'. But, strangely, I've once again noticed some regression as far as those 70s and/or slower 80s music that doesn't fit.

Yesterday, I heard two of these back-to-back -- I believe it was Billy Joel then Michael Jackson.

Just when I thought they hit their stride, they still seem to make some mistakes in listenability when you hear Foster the People then something like what's mentioned above.

I know, I'm overanalyzing the station and its playlist. It's just like a jolt to the system when you're hearing mostly up-beat 80s, 90s and 2000s then all the sudden it comes to a screeching halt. It's jarring and seemed to be going away. Now, I'm not so sure.

It's even stranger when you consider some of the harder picks they make, like Alanis Morrisette's "You Ought to Know". Yes, this song was a huge hit. But there's plenty of "safer" Alanis songs they could play. Did you ever notice that big hits with edgier lyrics (sure it's edited, but we all know what they were) go the way of the dinosaur as if stations are fearful of playing them? "You Ought to Know" and Nine Inch Nails' "Closer" are two huge '90s hits that you don't hear too often in the Upstate. B93.7 played "Closer" all the time when it was a hit. But now, even though they occassionally play older "hits", I doubt you'd ever hear that song on B93 again.

So basically, there's some songs I hear on MY that indicate that they aren't afraid to buck the "play it safe" attitude. But then they play older songs that are a direct contradiction of that.

i pulled up mediabase from yesterday and 102.5 played michael jackson three times at 5:47a 9:59a and 5:13p all plays had nineties or songs from 2000 before and after i dont know how they program the streaming but i know they play music during commercials and that might be what you heard

Were you listening to the stream? I've listened to MY enough to know that it's rare for them to play two 80s songs in a row (or a 70s then 80s song). Usually each era of music is distributed better than that.

B usually stays away from songs with an alternative or edgy sound (other than rhythmic product). I hear a song like "Pumped Up Kicks" more on MY - and it was a big top 40 hit. MY does play some edgy selections, like "Rockstar" or "Semi-Charmed Life." Heck, 107.9 The Link in Charlotte edits "Pumped Up Kicks", which MY does not. They play quite a few songs by Alanis - aside from "Ironic", I haven't heard any of her songs around here in ages. That's where I give them props - they are playing songs that this market has been missing out on for ages that were big hits in their day. They're going in the right direction, but need...if I can quote them - "a little nip here, a little tuck there". Nevertheless, musically, the good far outweighs the bad on the station.

If they are going to go all-Christmas, they will do it tomorrow morning. They usually follow Magic shortly after, but this year Magic kind of gave them a curve ball by doing it at 7pm.

I may have been streaming and, in general, I still like their mix. But for about two weeks it seemed that just about all of the 70s music was completely gone. This morning, I was dismayed when I heard "I Survive" (on the radio, not on the stream).

But I agree that the good far outweighs the bad overall. I'll just be flipping every once in a while, which again more recently I really never had to, but now it seems I do again.

As for Christmas, I sincerely hope they don't follow Magic. They've been pushing the Christmas stream on their website a lot so I'm thinking that they won't.
