BREAKING: MY 102.5 FLIPS

Not to be a broken record, but the trend towards a few more oldies in the mix does seem to be continuing. Just heard Bonnie Tyler and my stomach started to churn. And, yes, this was the live broadcast.

Probably overthinking, but I'm wondering if the past couple of days, when I've been hearing a bit more 70s, are part of an attempt to get some of Magic's audience during the holidays knowing they were going all-Christmas any day (which happened to be yesterday). Seems plausable, but not sure if they're as sly as that.

Gotta stop ranting...it's still better than anything else in the Upstate right now.

Actually, they've played 'Total Eclipse' since the summer. "I Will Survive" is, yes, another one that they could toss. Those few songs I can live with, but it would be interesting to know their logic behind playing them. They play like 5 1970s songs. I don't really see the point. Honestly, I don't hear any 1970s or slow 1980s songs they have not been playing.

I just remembered - MY hasn't always gone all-Christmas when Magic has - there was that one time 4 or 5 years ago when Magic went all-Christmas in early November and MY didn't. Seems like Magic went back to their regular format after a few days (or something weird like that), then preceeded to go back to Christmas when MY finally did a week later. My memory may be rusty, though. I hope we don't see a repeat of that.

If they weren't tied to the satellite format, 96.7 could go all-Christmas - just to take the format's exclusivity away from Entercom and Magic.

you must have been watching reruns of one day at a time and meant bonnie franklin. checked today's mediabase and no bonnie tyler on 102.5. i think going christmas on 98.9 is a mistake for their p-1s that are not ready for christmas it is giving them a chance to sample 102.5 whether 102.5 goes christmas or not the early start of christmas may have gained new listeners once the decorations come down

Apparently, WSPA sees something in it because they went all-Christmas on November 11th in 2010 and November 12th in 2009. WMYI has also done it on those dates until this year, when they (thankfully) did nothing it all. If it was a mistake or they didn't benefit from it, I'm pretty sure 98.9 wouldn't keep doing it year after year.

I'm not losing my mind. Dave Kent even came on after the song and said something like "ahh.. Bonnie Tyler". Does that database show DJ picks or just the automated stuff? I have noticed that MY's playlist as well as even the last 10 played haven't even been close lately. Don't even know where they're getting it from. Anyway, I'm just going to try to let my frustration over a few 70s songs go...venting isn't doing any good. Just hope they don't regress. I like the direction they've been heading.

And still hope they don't go all Christmas.

interesting new topic. do you change your station two months of the year to try to sell to those agencies and time buyers who have dollars to spend during the holidays? or do you toss new formats into the air to see if they are better than santa. or do you maintain your format and acknowledge the holiday. i see times changing. i am not sure the all christmas format two months out when there are only twelve is a good representation of your station year round to a time buyer or a local business but agencies are known for not making the best decisions for their clients

my mistake. total eclipse by bonnie tyler at 5:27 is there research to prove that a mid 20 year old female wouldn't like that song?

Is there research to prove that they do? If they're trying to be a Hot or Fresh AC, that song doesn't belong. I have heard enough of the stations to know. Some of the slow Journey ballads ("Faithfully") are played by some of those stations, and similar sounding tracks, but the rest is normally aggressive/upbeat 80s like Dead or Alive, AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Prince, Def Leppard, etc.

Like I said, ultimately, I don't care if they want to throw something like that in, but their logic would be interesting to know as it is rather...unique.

Not to change the subject, but can someone please tell the engineer to have the correct call letters on the RDS and HD radio text. Both HD1 and 2 show WYMI. Thank you. I am enjoying IHeart My 80's on HD2.

Interesting. I used to have an HD radio (unfortunately totaled that car and don't have one in my new one). At that time all the HD2 options pretty much sucked.
Good to hear that WMYI is doing 80s on it's HD2.

I didn't know 102.5 HD2 went to all-80s. I know it had been all-90s when it started, then smooth jazz.

Yeah, the HD2's here aren't any good. If I recall correctly, 93.7 HD2 is comedy, 98.9/101.1 HD2 are blues, 100.5 HD2 is gospel (?), 92.5 HD2 is Americana, and that's pretty much it. 96.7 HD2 may still be classic alternative, I don't know. I, personally never had one. HD radio choices are probably good in bigger cities, but are less than impressive in the smaller ones.

MY has sounded good this weekend. Hopefully it was just coincidental that they sounded older some last week.

Yeah, those sound about right, except for 96.7 which was and probably still is gospel. I think it was classic alternative until Shine came on. I probably would have gotten another HD radio if it was classic alternative. I believe they never have updated the HD radio website to reflect the new
HD2 for Shine.

Since I have tended to be negative in many of my recent posts as far as MY's mixing of 70s songs in, I thought I'd give props where they're due.

I've listened to MY for over 2 straight hours today and the only 70s song I've heard was Paul McCartney and the Wings' "A Wonderful Christmas Time". As far as Christmas music goes, that's pretty recent, so I'm fine with that. And also fine with the fact that I haven't heard anything as bad as Bonnie Tyler or the Commodores today.

Only a two-hour sample so I'm sure it won't continue without some intrusion, but wanted to at least say I've been a happy camper this morning.

Yeah, they play some pretty good stuff. I heard them play "Ants Marching" by DMB this morning. That was a surprise, but a pleasant one. They are doing a good job with keeping the Christmas mix contemporary. I listened this afternoon and the only bad thing I heard was Gloria Gaynor, sandwiched inbetween Finger Eleven and Kelly Clarkson's latest. Yikes!

Yes, they surprise me every once in a while with a good 90s song I haven't heard in a while.

A bit off topic, but I took my wife's car today and her Sirius stations made me a little sad. It's hard to believe how much new music we don't hear in the Upstate. I'm not even talking about just completely new rock bands, but even something as simple as Coldplay. Have you even heard any of their new album's songs in the Upstate? And if we do hear some of those songs, it takes forever.

And it's not just satellite, I remember hearing Adele on an Atlanta station months before she was ever played here.

I don't spend enough time in the car for me to warrant satellite. But just makes me realize how much I'm missing out on (although I do listen to other city's stations at work at times).

Not that MY is "breaking ground", but that's one reason why I was shocked when I heard them play Florence and the Machine for the first time (another group I heard in Atlanta or Philly months before here).
