Breaking News: Curtis Sliwa Goes National

I just listened to Curtis start after the 8pm hour on WABC and it sounds like he will be doing 8 to 10 at night the next two days and on Wendesday, his show will officially launch nationally. A program clock has already been posted for affiliates here: http://www.wabcradio.com/article.asp?id=971976.

Since it says he will air from 9pm-12am ET, it appears that Bob Grant gets reduced to the 8-9pm hour which could eventually go to a three-hour expanded Mark Levin show.

Curtis will also air on WJR from and WMAL in Washington, DC in addition to stations that already carry his program such as WTKK and KABC. Also expect Jerry Doyle to be out at WBAP as a result of Sliwa's syndication.

No word yet on what will happen with Laura Ingraham on WABC, but expect an announcement tonight after the 10pm hour. Perhaps she will be going on live from 10am-12pm. Stay tuned for more details.

I wish him luck, but with that thick New York accent, I wouldn't be surprised if most listeners outside of the Northeast find him completely out of touch.

Like Michael Savage?

Just got off the phone with a nice woman at WABC. She said they just found out on Friday that Curtis is going national between 9PM and 1AM weeknights. She confirmed to me that Laura Ingraham is still with WABC radio, but she said the programming department is keeping what is going on very quiet.

If Laura Ingraham is still with the company, then the only logical place for her to go would be in the late morning slot live after Imus. This has not been confirmed, but it sounds like this is the most likely scenario with this new information.

10am to noon. Take it to the bank.

I'm sure WABC is taking TRN to the bank to clear Ingraham on WABC. That would be a huge clear for her but one that would have to be costing them a pretty penny.

And if Boyce becomes TRN's NY rep, he'll cash in, right?

Your thread stated that Curtis may be getting a syndication deal. Well, I included in my thread that it was going to happened and included a link to show that it was happening. I understand that you are just trying to direct people to your thread, but I have started a thread talking about Curtis' syndie deal, other stations he may be on, and the future of the WABC late-morning slot. Sorry that your ego has been tarnished.

Now for some more breaking news, it appears the both Laura Ingraham and Bob Grant are currently negotiating with WABC about their futures on the station, from a source at WABC.

I would speculate that they are both trying to get that late morning spot.

If that is true then my money is on Ingraham...TRN can write a bigger check than Bob Grant can for that prime real estate!

That's what I was thinking. As much as I like Bob Grant, I can't see WABC putting him 10am-noon. That would further alienate the key 25-54 demo with Imus, Grant, and Paul Harvey between 6 am and noon (although they are all superb broadcasters). This will be a huge pickup for Ingraham if she gets it. Both TRN and Ingraham will be happy because this is what Laura wanted when she got lokced out of studio earlier this year; she wanted that coveted 10-noon slot.

I think it's interesting that they didn't just move Ingraham there right away. As much as I feel bad for him, Bob Grant must be fighting to the death for that slot since his show was reduced to only an hour (although that will probably go to a new three-hour Mark Levin).

I just hope WABC gets this figured out soon and announces the final new lineup because radio geeks like me really want to know this stuff and WABC is trying to keep everything hush-hush until something is decided.

My no-brainer prediction: Laura gets 10 am-11:45 am.

My shocker: An upset Grant leaves WABC after losing out to Laura.

DToTheJ,

>>>My shocker: An upset Grant leaves WABC after losing out to Laura.<<<

If Grant leaves WABC, that'll leave the station with only one hour of local programming.

A major powerhouse like WABC in New York should not give in to devoting 23 hours a day to syndicated/national programming. The 5-6AM timeslot is bearly not enough time to focus on local issues.

Thanks,

The New York talk radio landscape has always confused me that way. Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, all of them manage to find a balance between local and national talk shows on their big AM talkers. KFI now I believe is more popular than WABC. You do have some local shows on WOR, but they only have a 2.4 share.

It's because New York is a media market like no other when it comes to its desire for national programming. I remember reading somewhere about how New York has made itself into a market that cares more about the nation than local issues. Often, local New York issues are national issues anyways.

It should be noted that WABC's syndicated programming is often times more popular than its local porgamming and it delivers better ratings. Syndication yields superior talent, and that is what the New York market has demanded. Plus, most national shows are from New York if they have a New York clearance anyways.
