**Breaking News for Memphis market***

Bobby O'Jay announced on his morning show (11-19-2010) that 1070 WDIA will be adding a FM signal......great news for their loyal listeners. Here's a look into the future....after a year/or so look for CC to flip 1070 to a different format. This seems to be a growing trend for popular AM stations.....

I doubt CC would do anything different with the AM if they added an FM counterpart. Adding a new format would require money and effort.

There are some CC multicasts around Alabama and they've never separated the AM & FM… 1420/105.9 in Tuscaloosa, 960/105.5 in Birmingham, 710/96.1-HD2 Mobile…

I mention that last one simply because I wonder if they'll just add WDIA to an HD2 subchannel and not blow up a full station for it. If I were gonna blow up an FM for an AM simulcast, I'd be picking WREC. WDIA does well enough on its own.

What makes the most sense, IMO, is adding the WDIA subchannel to V101 and adding the WREC subchannel to Rock 103. Your thoughts?

Sounds good to me. V101 & WDIA would be a good fit. I bet Rock 103 could add WREC without really compromising the sound quality of the two existing channels. Something about CC's implementation of HD though is all their stations just sound worse than others. It sounded that way to me in Memphis and is glaringly obvious down here in Mobile.

But 3 channels CAN be done — I recall one of the St Louis CBS stations (KEZK?) that runs a music subchannel and also carries KMOX, and all three managed to sound really decent.

To be honest, I was really thinking back when 101.9 was being put on, that it'd be a simulcast of WDIA or WREC instead of a competitor to the entrenched top 40 in town. So who knows what CC's real plans are!

It seems like DIA has lost it's perch on the top stations 12 plus lately. My guess is that CC wants to put them back up there. The FM will certainly help. Thank you CC!

So where on FM would it go. Are they ready to blow of Radio Now? I would guess Rock 103 still bills decent even though there has been allot of erosion there over the years.

The only other option which I don't see would be merging V101 and DIA but they is a generation difference in the two and I think they are distinct demo's. I can't see that working well. It would really allow RBO to smash and grab some numbers.

v101 is smashing everyone right now in PPM. stations like soul and dia have a dying fan base.

As crazy as it may sound, I think putting an established AM on an HD2 channel will probably drive more sales of HD radios than "computer in a closet" setups!

Down here in the Mobile area, if it weren't for CC putting their talker on the HD2 of the classic rock station, I wouldn't be able to hear it at night (or during the day, at some locations near the coast). WNTM has a puny nighttime signal. On HD2 it's spotty, but still 50 times bigger than it would be otherwise.

HD radio might take off if you could actually find a store that sold them. You can order them or go to a special electronics store and get one, but they are usually hidden in the back with an inch of dust covering them. Most salesmen, esp. Radio Shack don't have a clue what they are. I once had a Radio Shack employee tell me I needed a UHS-VHS coupler for my TV antenna. Of course Radio Shack knows all about cellphones because they always try to sell me one. If I want to buy a phone why would I go to "Radio" Shack. I'd show at Phone Shack instead.

The only problem with putting an AM station on an analog FM is when they do that it is no longer an AM station. The format becomes more of a cookie cutter FM format and the heritage of the AM station is lost and forgotten. Often time the AM will eventually change formats or be sold. And in many cases the FM eventually changes also.

Remember KVOO Tulsa, WNOE New Orleans, WDAF Kansas City, WJDX Jackson, MS, etc?

Unless they put it on a translator or something, it's sort of like wetting oneself in a dark suit. It gives ya a nice warm feeling, but no one notices. LOL! My guess is a few people will buy a radio that are loyal fans, but it certainly isn't any reason to think they are now a "FM".

The Clear Channel hd2's in Memphis are by far the worst sounding hd's I have heard anywhere.
Actually the main stations sound better in Analog than in hd. Good Job!

hd2's can sound excellent. Proof is 104.5 hd2. In DFW the hd2s and 3s all sound great.

I'm considering unhooking my hd tuner. Other than WKNO there isn't much left to listen to.

I have fairly solid 3g coverage during my commute. (there is only 1 place where there is a break in data and that just causes a very brief buffer)

I was just kvetching about how poor CC sound down in my neck of the woods. Like low bitrate mp3s. The effect of cascading codecs means the HD sound even worse. CC appears to not get this, or doesn't care, because practically every one of their stations' HD feeds sound bad, -1 or -2. On the flip side, Entercom and Cumulus seem to take more pride in their overall sound quality. For the most part.

Why is Clear Channel trying to kill WDIA?? WDIA is better than KJMS.

Cc needs to grab a couple fm translators for DIA. They could say that noise at night from man-made noise is killing them. They have the ppm numbers to "prove" it. They need to protect that heritage station before it's too late. It would be a huge tragedy to the market and the black community at large go loose WDIA. It's a one-of-a-kind jewel.

Apparently, the have. See discussion above of W244BY.

The application states that KJMS is the primary. But, they would be allowed to retransmit the HD2 signal. So, yes... it would appear that WDIA may well be the intended stream for that signal.

It all makes sense.

Interesting. Yeah. It wouldn't make too much sense for them to translate the primary station at that location unless they were using it for 'DIA or something. Hmmm... Maybe there's hope.

I logged the WDIA relay yesterday evening via KJMS -2 (IBOC subchannel). Bitstarved audio sounding like the digital scanner my Dad has when I go visit him. Sounds like KJMS-Clear Channel is taking the IBOC stream of WDIA-AM instead of a "clean" feed for IBOC FM.
