Breaking News.... Media consolidation seen hurting diversity

Courtesy of MSNBC:
WASHINGTON - Easing government rules to allow more media consolidation would push out niche radio programming such as classical, jazz and gospel music while doing little to improve local TV coverage, new studies say.

Reports released Monday by two public interest groups, the Benton Foundation and the Social Science Research Council, challenged the Federal Communications Commission's argument that media consolidation would improve local coverage and programming due to synergy effects.

The FCC is reviewing the issue following a failed 2003 attempt to loosen media ownership restrictions

What shall happen from the above "review"????

...............All DISCO, all the time

This isn't exactly a shock. Senator Barbara Boxer smoked out the FCC's own staff reports from 2003 and 2004, never before released to the public, indicating that more consolidation would reduce public service and further limit programming choice if implemented. The staff strongly advised against any further change, going so far as to suggest that if radio station clusters in a market are sold, they should not necessarily be sold as a bloc but spun off to more than one buyer.

The FCC Chairman tried to have the reports destroyed, but failed. Instead they are viewable on the FCC website. Very interesting reading, and they make it difficult for the Commission to move on the issue.
