Breaking News:MJ Is Dead

There's no doubt in my mind Michael Jackson was a PHENOMENAL talent. The biggest tragedy was somehow, after Thriller went through the roof in all time sales, the Michael Jackson I loved as a kid became this strange characterization of himself. And just got stranger...and stranger...

I don't know what demons were in his mind that made Michael Jackson go from handsome talented superstar to near sideshow freak. But that's not the Michael Jackson I want to remember. It's that cover of Off The Wall where we last saw Michael Jackson in his natural, undistorted prime that I want to remember.

And that's where I'll leave it......

R.I.P. Michael Jackson a true American icon. L.A. Radio paying tribute to Michael: KKHT,KRTH,KDAY,KJLH,KLSX,KIIS,KOST,KBIG are some of the stations playing MJ's music today.

A sad day in music history and film too (Farah Fawcett). Michael Jackson had many, many memorable hits and will please music fans for generations to come. His Thriller album...what can one say?.........and all his huge songs as a soloist and as part of the Jackson Five. He will be missed for sure!

Looks like the only stations actually able to talk about it and go all Michael musically were those with actual "live" shows. Days like this are a nightmare for PD's with VT'd shows.

KRTH is doing a wonderful job in their retrospective of the late Michael Jackson. Listening online.

TMZ broke the news an hour and a half before anyone else committed to it.
What do they know?
Harvey Levin is a reaper, that's how!

Well put.

Can you imagine how huge a star he would have been today if none of the post-Thriller weirdness had happened?

I think it's embarrassing that the rock stations ignored this.
Flipped around and NOTHING on the rockers.
That's a horrible lack of flexibility.

That's odd. Just about every station I hit around 4 p.m. had Michael Jackson music playing. All except Jill-FM, KBIG (MY), and KYSR.

According to yes.com KBIG played a few MJ songs scattered over a few hours. Didn't catch it but they're voicetracked during the afternoon drive... maybe made it more difficult? KROQ did not play any either in addition to KYSR, but their sister stations were.

If Ozzy Osbourne or Jimmy Page passed, would the Urban stations program Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin music for a day? And don't go the Beat It route. The only reason the rock stations played it back in the day, was due to Eddie VanHalen playing guitar on the track.

In Las Vegas, KXPT 97.1 The Point, the classic rock station, gave updates as the information came down the wire. And they played Michael Jackson "Beat It" as soon as CNN confirmed the death. In fact, Mike Culotta told the story of working for the AOR station in Vegas back in 1982 when the PD walked in with a 45 and said play this record. It was Beat It. I remember that KOMP, who had an AOR format back then, started playing Beat It and Billy Jean. Thriller was just that frickin' huge!!

The rock stations should have been all over this, too. Not just because Thriller had a few crossover hits, but because MJ was an undeniable influence on all popular music. He recorded with artists ranging from Paul McCartney to Heavy D- so any station playing any kind of popular music (including rock) from the best five decades should have taken time to honor his passing.

KROQ played Alien Ant Farm's cover of "Smooth Criminal" incessantly, and last year, KYSR spun the Fall Out Boy/John Mayer cover of "Beat It". If their artists were so influenced by Michael, then don't they owe him some respect upon his death?

Equally important to his contribution to music is perhaps his unintentional bridging of racial divides in this country. If Thriller doesn't become a crossover hit, many black artists don't get played on MTV or on mainstream CHR stations. A generation grows up not influenced by black artists. We lose a key component in the creation of the multiculturalism that is beginning to define 21st century America. Intentional or not, Michael Jackson played a large part in this phenomenom.

You've back-handedly proven my point. These stations played alternative versions of Michael Jackson songs, because the originals did not fit their format. Just because Alien Ant Farm and John Mayer covered a Michael Jackson song, doesn't neccessarily mean that he had a profound influence on their career or style. A few years back, a number of rock groups collaborated on a Carpenters tribute recording. Does that mean that Karen and richard Carpenter had a profound affect on these artists? Not especially. As someone who grew up in the 60's into the 70's, I have a fondness for The Jackson Five. But I surely don't want J5 music mixed in with my Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin. There are stations for that time/genre of music. But at the end of the day, no. Michael Jackson deserves no more special treatment frlom your local rock station than the man in the moon.

Good point! Slash played guitar on "Black and White," but that wasn't enough to get it played on rock radio! And Joe Walsh played guitar on at least one of Andy Gibb's records back in the '70s, but I never heard that one on rock radio, either! ::)
