I find it different that Nine-FM decided to do the A - Z by song title rather than artist, which is the way most stations do the A - Z. Now we'll get a chance to hear songs in their collection that have yet to be played. I however thought they wouldn't have Milli Vanilli in their collection. I was surprised big time, unlike most other stations that have a collection that was built up over the years, including the satellite services.

LOL I thought they actually got their website up! But, give them a break, its only been one year....

Doing to A to Z by title makes more sense than by artist; in fact, I've never heard it done by artist. The problem with the latter is that you could be stuck on an artist - playing all their songs at once leads to tune out by those who don't care for the artist.

A to Z by title solves that problem and makes it more interesting. With regard to how big of a library a station has - it doesn't matter really with A to Z. No matter what they may have, they're still pretty much playing the titles they want though they will go deep.

The costs of buying a big library on hard-drive from vendors such as TM/Century are pretty small in the grand scheme of things. Spend a few dollars and get every song you could want and need in a matter of days...

At The 80's Channel, we did an "80's A To Z Weekend." We went by artist, but didn't do it quite THAT way. We'd do one of each letter through the alphabet, and then back to the beginning. (eg- Paula Abdul, Baltimora, Cheap Trick....ZZ Top, Animotion, Bobby Brown....)

The comedy was when we hit "X." I could only find ONE charting song from an X artist - "Mayor Of Simpleton" by XTC. Sooooooo, every 26 songs...it was played. We even played that up that fact in the promo. I was expecting a thank you letter from XTC bandmembers, since it got more airplay that weekend than when it was on the charts!!!

These feature weekends are great to do. Breaks up the monotony, and gives the listeners a way to "play along" at home. But, it's sure a pain to schedule!!! Although, with the 9 format, train wrecks are welcome. So, Matt's got that going for him.

XTC was probably too busy marching for some trees rights to breathe air without volcanic smoke or some stupid thing. They along with The Jam were very active in the loony fringes of the political world.

Agreed! Putting weekends like that together make the job fun -
and yeah, its a lot of work. The XTC thing is wonderful!

That's pretty funny. But I'm surprised you didn't choose either XTC's "Generals & Majors" which got pretty massive airplay on WLS in 1981 or their 1987 "hit" "Dear God" which not only got huge airplay on college stations but was also a HUGE MTV hit. Then again, not many people in Chicago had MTV in '87 (which I still find weird). While "The Mayor Of Simpleton" was their highest charting single on Billboard, it only got marginal play on 'XRT back in the day.

If you went by title, you coulda played Olivia Newton John (and ELO)'s mini-epic,
"Xanadu!"

I'd love to do the 80s format. Did you guys play Joey Scarbury??

Xanadu aired on WXXY a number of times. Most notably, during the "Turkey Time Travel" weekend in 2000. Every hour, we focused on a specific Thanksgiving Day of the 80's. That was my fave feature weekend, cuz you REALLY felt like it was 198_ again. I even threw some of the stiffies on for flavor. Hell, they aired THEN!!!

As for the XTC tunage, I'll be honest - it wasn't my thing in the 80's. I was way more a pop/mainstream guy. So, I stuck with Billboard, rather than gut, for that one. I grew up in NYC, and we didn't have MTV till late '86. I still have a videotape I rolled of their Top 20 one weekend, with Land Of Confusion at #1. (GREAT VIDEO!!!)

Believe it or not, the Greatest American Hero did not walk on our air. But, had we been around longer...he could have ;-)

King For A Day was also a moderate hit for XTC.

Oh, and PS...you can do a shift on 80's Now Dot Com anytime you please :)

Sorry to be a jerk but I can guarantee you that WLS-AM/FM NEVER played XTC. And having watched too many hours of MTV from 1981 to present, "Dear God" was only played late at night or on 120 Minutes.

Trust me on this.

According to Ron Smith's WLS Chart book..."Generals & Majors" did, in fact, get airplay on WLS in April 1981. In fact, the song cracked the WLS top 30. I believe, by this point, WLS was doing the AOR/top 40 hybrid thing. Rush next to Smokey Robinson etc...

And trust me...I *clearly* remember "Dear God" by XTC getting substantial MTV play during daytime hours, in addition to "spins" on 120 Minutes. In fact, it was given "Breakthrough Video" status and received extensive airplay during late spring '87. I specifically remember this because I had cable hooked up to my stereo in my bedroom and remember recording "Dear God" off the MTV audio feed to my tape deck.

Hard to believe, but true.

Java`s right, "Dear God" was a big deal on MTV in 1987.
Let`s not forget, this was a very controversial tune
nearly twenty years ago, as the songwriter (Andy Patridge)
basically confirms that he`s an atheist. The highlight is
near the end when the singer defiantly reads a list of
things he doesn`t believe it, including, at the end, God.

The Deep End w/ Sandy Maxx

This is a great time to talk about The Deep End. This alternative 80's show was originated by Frank Black on WXXY in 1999. Sandy Maxx took over 6 months later. HUGE following in Chicago and worldwide online! The Deep End played a lot of VERY cool "lesser aired" groups, a la XTC. Sandy jumped across the street with me to The Zone in 2001 to host The Alternative Zone, but it was NOTHING close to The Deep End.

While I am sure I'll get flamed for this, The Deep End is returning to 80's Now Dot Com with Sandy Maxx as host! Stay tuned for details. ALSO, if you're missing your 80's rock fix, Zander (formerly of The Loop, WCKG AND The 80's Channel) also lives on 80's Now Dot Com, with The Rockin' 80's. It airs every Saturday night at 8PM Central, and re-runs Wednesday nights at 9PM. FYI: This is not the abridged Rock Of The 80's that ran on WLUP. This is Mark's ORIGINAL show that he programmed BEFORE arriving at The Loop. LOTS of Chicago favorites - you WILL enjoy!

Sorry for the lengthy plug, but it IS relevant to Chicago radio of the past. Zander and Sandy still have a huge following, and we've got a spot for all of you in our pool. Come on in, water's warm!
