Breaking news out of Detroit....

From All Access Net News(June 21st):

There is a rumor circulating that Radio one Urban WDTJ(105.9 JAMZ)DETROIT may leave the "mike rockin'" altogether in THE MOTOR CITY. The rumor has them dropping the Urban format on WDTJ and moving crosshall sister WDMK's Urban AC format into the slot. ALL ACCESS sources are whispering that if this happens, RADIO would most likely bring REACH MEDIA's TOM JOYNER over to WDTJ for mornings. JOYNER is currently doing wakeups for crosstown CLEAR CHANNEL Urban AC WMXD(MIX 92).

Now, these maneuvers would leave current RADIO ONE Urban AC WDMK(102.7 KISS FM) available for a proposed Black Gospel format. RADIO ONE is still broadcasting some gospel on WCHB-A, but they have gradually been moving more towards Urban Talk.

All said, these moves would leave crosstown CLEAR CHANNEL Urban WJLB(FM98) as the only Mainstream Urban in the market.

<font color=3333ff>Tom Joyner is making the switch to all Radio One stations since Radio One bought Joyners show & company.

That's what happened in ST Louis, Philly and it will happen in Detroit. Its no big news. As far as dropping Urban, no way. WDTJ is the highest rated station Radio One has, and moving Joyner to Kiss will raise up Kiss's position guaranteed.

They already had a Gospel channel on AM that flipped to community talk.

Another rumor is that Radio One is buying 107.5 WGPR. If this happens, it will be just like Philly and a slick move for them. Therefore, they would have an Urban AC, Urban, and Gospel all on FM along with talk on AM. Perfect for Radio One.

Talk to me TJ, I am from Chi-town, do you think that Cathy & Company will come in, buy the Crawford stations and take Joyner from CC? Holla back, JoJo.

<font color=3333ff>Prior to going mainstream with Power 92, Crawford was a very low-key company... a bit strange I thought. They wouldn't give out any fax number or emails. All thier business was done by snail mail.

Being that they are a private company and not publicly traded, they can do what ever they want to do. Their staff generally stays long-term there as well. In Chicago, Crawford has owned 92.3 since the 60's if I remember right. They've owned 106.3 since 97. They have the new 106.3 simulcast for the west as well. And of course, still doing their niche of brokered religious on 102.3

In their eyes, they are doing what they want to do. This is the largest market that Crawford owns stations in. They won't sell them. I could see them sell off smaller markets. Not Chicago.

If Radio One were to take the Chicago stations, then they would definitely flip Power to UAC and put Tom Joyner on it from WVAZ. R1 owns Joyner. It's that simple. Gospel had already been tried on 106.3 by Crawford, so I'm not sure what 106 and 102 would become. Probably 106 would become hip hop with Russ Parr, much like the other R1 urbans. One of the best things for either of them to do is to make a offer that Next Media can't refuse and buy the north 102.3
Then they'd have the 106 simulcast and the 102 simulcast. Can't get any better than that besides hiring the former engineer of Big City Radio so they can get their simulcast sync right.

As far as Detroit, Radio One would only benefit from buying 103.5 from Crawford..... but being that that's the only FM that crawford has... I doubt they would sell even tho their ratings are gutter. I'm kinda amazed that 103.5 is CCM and not Gospel. Crawford could beat R1 to the punch if they did that.

I think that R1 buying WGPR 107.5 in Detroit would be the best move.

Of course, most of this post is speculation and scenarios.

Its official:WDTJ/DETROIT WILL BE HISTORY!!!!

Here's another update from All Access Net News(June 24th):

The RADIO ONE/DETROIT rumors (see NET NEWS 6/21) are officially blazing as ALL ACCESS hears that Urban WDTJ(105.9 JAMZ) is being shuttered so that crosshall sister Urban AC WDMK can move itself over the the station's frequency(and bigger stick) at approximately 3a tonight[June 25th]. With the move, you can expect crosstown CLEAR CHANNEL Urban AC WMXD(MIX 92) morning man -- REACH MEDIA's TOM JOYNER -- to jump ship and join his RADIO ONE family on the "new" WDMK shortly.

Now, what's going to become of the frequency that WDMK is leaving behind? Sources say the smart money is on a Black Gospel format... but we already told you that on TUESDAY(June 21st). No word on when the format will debut, however.

Re: Its official:WDTJ/DETROIT WILL BE HISTORY!!!!

<font color=3333ff>They still say "rumors." Can be true, can be false. Only time will tell.

Even though 105.9 is a weaker wattage, it's higher and covers the market farther.... even into Ohio. Funny thing is that in Ohio, Mix 95.7 is the Joyner affiliate, so Ohioans can get it twice if Detroit moves him to 105.9.

Radio One has not tried Gospel in a market without having established Urban and Urban AC stations first. This will have to be seen. I sure hope that "rumors" of them picking up 107.5 are true. It'd be Philly all over again and secure them perfectly in the market.

Its Official!

<font color=3333ff>Reports are saying Hot 1027 and Kiss 1059 !!

Just like I said above : )

Radio One won't do Gospel without having established a Urban and Urban AC in their group first.

And the Hot name is national for them ........ Atlanta, Dayton, Louisville (former Hot104) ..... so that's what I was thinking yesterday!
