Breaking News

Inside Radio said:
Is FM news making a comeback? ABC News
Radio thinks so. It's launching ABC FM News in afternoon drive. ABC News Radio VP/GM Steve Jones says a lot of programmers are realizing news can build cume, something that'll grow in importance as more markets convert to PPM. ABC FM News was developed following months of research in conjunction with a national perceptual study. It found heavy music FM listeners also want more news and information.

Making a comeback? Who said it ever went away in the first place? I'm not sure Steve Jones should be applauded or given the "Big Duh Award." Of course, ABC is making these pronouncements to further its own good, but perhaps their "findings" will benefit listeners as well as ABC's bottom line.

As to ABC's national perceptual study, they could have saved their money and asked any 300 listeners in any community if news was important, especially after last October's surprise snowfall in Buffalo, hurricane Katrina or 9-11. I'm sure they'd find out that Star 102.5 derived some measure of benefit by airing 60 second local news capsules supplied by the WBEN news department at the bottom of each hour throughout the day.
