My point was actually to show that some posters say things that are patently incorrect, or worse...people who READ these forums believe them. Saying that country music is getting...quoting exactly: "more pouplor now sinch everyone is movin over to country music stations now." Good grammer...must have gone to MY hi skoul.
I don't know about you folks, but I am entertained by posts on this board. EVEN the ones that trashed me unmercifully about two years ago. Most were SO over the top that they were laughable...others cut like a knife. No one BUT my family and close friends know exactly what happened to me in the last three years, including why I was REALLY let go from my last gig.
And ONLY they know the incredible pride when I was asked to do Radio Greats at CBS-FM during the summer. I worked 38 years to get to that point, with many UPS and DOWNS along the way, just like MOST radio folks who have stuck with it as long as I have.
But back to posting things...
I love to see how some folks pass along wrong information, opinions based on absolutely nothing to base them on and (the worst infraction) possibly ruining someone's career due to this incorrect information. This is where I've ALWAYS had a problem with a cloaked board.
I've been the brunt of much...shall we say..."incorrect" information on boards like this, as have other radio men and women. Most of us just brush it off as bull$*#@, usually written by someone with a grudge or perhaps jealousy. Either way, MOST of us chuckle. Sometimes it gets under the skin, as they are people too, with feelings, and responsibilities...but for the most part, it is all a hoot.
Indeed, there are times (as Tom McNally pointed out) that there IS useful information posted and tributes to colleagues who have passed on (Maze comes to mind recently in NJ) and if ANY station makes a move based on a couple of guys who live in their mommy's house in the basement at age 42, you're mistaken. Sure, there ARE times when posters ARE correct about program decisions, or hirings/firings/music, etc...
In MY observation, most of the names in the biz DON'T post because their bosses say NOT to do so. And while the biz is in a tizzy at the moment...as we read more bad news daily...there is nothing I love more than my family in this life than cracking open a mic and trying to entertain as many people as I possibly can in the time-frame that they ALLOW me into their cars, homes and workplace.
So Tom is correct. Entertainers of any kind, and perhaps politicians are the only folks held up to public ridicule or adulation. Sometimes both at the same time! NO one has ever been hired because of a post. Some fear firing if they DO however.
I only post to clear the air...or to tell the truth...or to sometimes just be goofy. Just like I am on the air. That's too much for SOME owners and managers to handle. However, there IS no other way for me. Those in the know, understand WHY I posted this.
In MY comments in this thread, it appeared to one poster, that I was giving someone a hard time. I was playing it in a "tongue-in-cheek" way, of course, as always...using some radio realities of today's local radio climate to make a point. If it failed on some level, I'm sorry. I speak truth. I was NOT trying to insult the poster...but when someone makes sweeping generalizations with NO basis of fact, I believe the posts should be either edited by the administrators or at least acknowledged as bogus info. For all that Sniffen's opinions get blasted on his own site (and he takes posts OFF if they are not to his liking) at least people post there with knowledge they are out in the open field for everyone to see. That's why I sign my name at the end of posts on this board.
I also think that radio pro's (while ALL agreeing for the most part that things are bad at the moment)...as a GROUP, we need to resurrect the fun; the reason we got in to the biz in the first place. Us vets need to lead by example...and stop griping about how good it "used to be".
Any pros allowed to post, give us some feedback. Radio is STILL the most fun thing to do in the world after sex. Some of yous have done that WHILE you're on the air. I should write a book. Wait. I will!!! Run for cover.
Let's make a real effort to have reasoned discourse while discussing radio in NJ or ANYWHERE for that matter on Radio-Info. On this site, my former bossman, Tom Taylor, is one the most incredible radio guys I have ever met. I know MANY pros who CAN'T post are applauding right now. I accept your nomination for president of radio.
