Brian Scott former PD of WPTR 1977-78

I have just learned sadly that Brian Scott (Carl Kehl) has died. He actually passed away September 23, 2006 and maybe this was mentioned here before. Brian was PD and afternoon drive personality of 1540-WPTR from 1977-78. He was a great guy who later owned a travel agency in Boca Raton. I was Gary Evans at WPTR and did mid-days, working for the Bill Rust stations when John Lund was consultant. It was an exciting time for AM radio with the competition between WTRY and Rick Mitchell and WPTR. I remember promoting that we would give away the latest Elton John album every hour all weekend long. WTRY that Friday announced they would give away two Elton John albums every hour all weekend. As luck would have it, while I was on the air on WPTR I was monitoring WTRY when they ran their first contest at noon on Friday. I was the right number caller and they put me on the air live. When the announcer asked what my favorite radio station was I said "1540-WPTR". Needless to say we recorded all our contestants the rest of the weekend. I had dinner with Brian about 10 years ago and was hoping to get together with him this weekend while visiting Ft. Lauderdale. I called the travel agency last week to hear the terrifying news. He was just 58 years old. Life is precious...enjoy each day.

Thanks for posting about Brian. I have fond memories of working with him and can thank him for my first full time job doing overnights at PTR. Of course, I remember Gary Evans, aka Dave. Those were interesting times. If someone wasn't there, it was dead air. I still have those dreams that the song is over and I'm on the mic but just can't reach the carts filed along the wall. LOL. Lots of opportunity for people to learn and grow on the air. Brian did some incredible aircheck sessions, a few of which I still have. For anyone who didn't work with him, he would actually type them out break by break. Nice to hear from you on our local post. Forever Spatula..(inside joke)

Hi Dave & Kelly...

That is sad news indeed.

Brian was a great guy and a good friend back in those days. Geez...all those nights at Fatso Fogerty's...Brian trying to dance to "Couldn't Get it Right" by Climax Blues Band...great memories.

I remember the Elton John contest very well. I also remember you, Dave, wearing a bright canary yellow shirt one day and Brian making a comment about it. Your response was great: going into the production studio, turning on the mic, and starting to skcreech loud bird noises on the air behind Brian as his show was beginning. Somewhere in my boxes of tapes in my basement I have an aircheck of that. Classic.
