I realize no one cares about NASCAR on the radio (or at the track evidently, very small crowd at IMS) but I was running errands and listening to the Brickyard 400 on 1360 and around 2:15 they went back to FSN. Who starts a live event and then drops it one hour in?
 
I didn't get the chance to watch the Brickyard 400 this year...didn't they have a rain delay this year? Sometimes when there is a rain delay for longer than half hour, some of the stations will go back to regular programming. Most likely what happened in this case, but not for sure.

Also, in NASCAR; I think part of the dwindling audience at the track could be attributed to the change of the date when the Brickyard takes place in the race schedule. When the Brickyard first started back in the 1994 racing season, it was always held the first weekend in August. When my wife and I went in 2006, was when they announced that in 2007 the race was going to be moved to the last weekend in July. I think that messed up a lot of fans schedules, at least the people that had been going to the race for awhile.

From what I have seen and read recently, it's possible that the race may be dropped in the future; since Bruton Smith (owner of Daytona and Kentucky) is possibly getting a race added at Kentucky Speedway after so many years....
 
No way it gets dropped. The Nascar race is basically keeping IMS afloat. They'll do everything in their power to keep it, and the prestige of racing at Indy is something I don't think Nascar wants to lose.
 
NASCAR is hurting all over attendance-wise; one used to never be able to get tickets to Bristol but now they are advertising ticket deals for it..and it's not a scalper outfit.
 
The brickyard 400 is almost the 3rd crown jewel of nascar these days heck there was talk of moving the indy nationwide series race from orp to ims but that was shoty down this morning
 
I remember listening to NASCAR via radio in the early 70's when, even down South, you couldn't see it unless you went to the track. Now days the glare from empty aluminum seats is amazing. Even at Indy.
 
Speaking as a long time NASCAR fan, NASCAR has eliminated just about everything exciting about the race. Drivers can't show emotion anymore or they get docked with fines. restrictor plate racing is about the most boring thing there is. It has gotten so commercilized that you can't go anywhere without having a sponsor or logo in your face. About 10 years ago, NASCAR was on this kick about wanting to be more "family friendly". I said then that they were gonna have a hard time when those "families" found something else to do. Looks like that's happening now. They ran off the core fans chasing families. Now that the families have found something else, NASCAR needs to find something to draw the core fans back. Good luck with that.
 
Not a NASCAR guy but it is interesting about the family friendly approach.

I am a family guy, or was when my kids were small but at some point that whole idea seems to say there is no place anywhere where we can go and be grownups. I don't mean to say we should go to events and places and become falling down drunk thugs but short of that, it is getting ridiculous.

It reminds me of a buddy of mine who scored some free tickets for a Reds game and when he and another buddy got there, he was in the family friendly zone and could not even have a beer. That is a far cry from trying to keep fans from being drunk and disorderly.

Well, in terms of advertising and revenue dollars; NASCAR is still 2nd to Football (NFL); and that's saying something right there, that the fan loyalty is still there along with brand loyalty. People just can't afford to go to the races.

NASCAR did just open up it's own Hall of Fame in Charlotte about a month or two ago, and it is a 3 floor building with lots of hands on types of things to do, cars on display, etc. They had a huge ceremony to the unvailing. I am sure that it looks like it is pretty family oriented.

While it has taken a bit for the COT to grow on me; it's a decent car but some of the races it makes for boring single file type stuff like what happened last year...not sure where you getting the stuff with Restrictor plate racing being boring. If they DIDN'T have the Restrictor plates in place at places like Daytona or Talladega, the cars would be topping out at over 200 mph. Not an easy thing to try to control a 3000+ pound car on a 36+ degree embankment. Both of those races have had their shares of big accidents and wrecks even WITH the restrictor plates in place. Not sure as to how you can either of these venues is boring.

Be thankful KY didn’t get the “spring” date that Atlanta had. (Fox says the KY race will take place in July.) The spring race at AMS was “weather” challenged often on Atlanta. I use to live less than 10 miles from the KY. track, and I can remember Ski Butler still being open in late Feb. which is less than a couple of weeks from the spring Atlanta date.

That's what happens when you have a (robot) automated station. Clear Channel has ruined radio.

There were automated stations, but they had human oversight. I worked for a couple of them in Georgia. Now, stations in the larger markets turn the lights out and lock the doors at 7 o'clock...if not sooner. WHAS in Louisville has no local news after about 8 o'clock and on weekends.

I think that's the reason they didn't get the spring race. I can see them running on snow tires! I have seen snow during Derby week.
