It was either pi**-poor coverage by the networks' evening newsers
"western editions" of the bridge collapse in Minneapolis, or else at least
two of the local affils simply ran a delayed broadcast from 3:30, 4:00,
or sometime prior to 5:30.
NBC/KPNX(TV) 12 at 5:30:
Nightly did have the "western edition" banner on its 5:30 PT left coast feed,
but with their original pre-produced open. Brian Williams then tossed to a
talking head in Burbank, and that was it--no video, just a talking head.
ABC/KNXV-TV 15 at 5:30:
Original pre-produced open, no mention of the MSP bridge until after the
lead story. Gibson tossed to an "unknown" voice-over video. That was it.
Not sure if this was the 5:30 PT feed or something from earlier.
CBS/KPHO-TV 5 at 6:00:
By now one would think "yeah, we'll get a 5:30 or 6:00 left coast feed."
Guess again. Katie must have had a hot date, as it started out as one
of the east coast feeds with no mention, until about 11:00 in when (I
didn't see the transition to it) there was another voice doing a narration
over video. At the end of the cut-in this other voice said Katie would
return after this break.
I guess all three nets were doing cut-and-paste.
Would any staffers from 5, 12 and 15 care to enlighten us on just
what feed you aired and why didn't the nets go live with this?
Does the left coast just not care about a major disaster in MSP?
