bring back Coyote Country on 92.9 FM, KIIM FM needs a challenge!

the new MY Fm format is not working, they went from 3.3 to 3.0, their last book. almost the same as the former format the Mountain, Not a single station in the past decade has taken on KIIM FM, and they are atop the ratings heap. im thinking of a morning show syndicate like John Boy and Billy, back in 2002, they did not have that much success with syndication, and i believe, Coyote Country 92.9 FM had a local DJ, not a syndicate. either John Boy and Billy, or Big D and bubba, would be great. and 92.9 has an excellent signal, so lets kill My FM, and get another challenger for KIIM FM. :) :)

and no i dont think Clear channel will bring back Tim and Willy to Tucson, although that would be great, they cost a gold bar just to have on air. :) :)

when i say bring back, i mean they wont be on any Phoenix station but could be added to Tucson, but i strongly doubt this will happen.

The problem with all the country stations that have tried to beat KIIM was to sound different than KIIM (i.e. 16 songs every hour, classic country songs too...etc.)......and could never get anywhere near KIIM ratings wise....

Here's what you do....make the station sound just like KIIM and muck up market...call it TIM FM, and have it called "Tucson NEW Country Favourites".....

OK never mind...just bring back KOOL FM...... :D

How about something different - classic country from the 70's through the 90's...

Don't think the format would last forever, but might be a interesting 'competition'

Fans of country music and classic country have a way of building up loyalties to stations that they like. You can't compete with such stations by trying to do it on the cheap with a computerized jukebox that has no local personalities or local involvement. You also need a long term commitment. That leaves out Cheap Channel.

Classic Country, when attempted, is almost always done on the cheap using a satellite service. And to make it worse they often try doing it on AM. The stations get lousy ratings and the conclusion is reached that the format isn't good for much.

Incidentally, hardly anyone knows this but Clear Channel does have a country music station in Tucson. It's the HD side channel for KRQ. Predictably it is a computer jukebox.

thanks Caveman- 97 for leaving out the fact that K-hill 1250 plays COUNTRY music, isnt that a notion ::), and the fact that K-hill, beams it's daytime signal into the Tucson marketplace, i WILL be listening to K-hill next week, when i visit family in Tucson. thanks again for leaving that out, i appreciate it, fortunately i do research, alot of people dont, so if you guys want a country alternative, try tuning in to 1250 K-hill country. :) when your in Tucson as they do not stream online sadly.

There's not much point in mentioning KHIL-Willcox. Their signal is not going to penetrate Tucson very well. I imagine they are pretty much satellite anyway. Caveman 97 has the right idea with his KAVV (as he calls "the Cave", it's just that his class A signal will never reach Tucson either. I love country classic music, but unfortunately the market just wont support it in Tucson. It's been tried! KIIM-FM will always be a winner and for whatever reason, over the last 30+ years, Tucson has never supported two country stations. It appears that it never will. I agree with others, bring 92.9 back as an oldies station, but then again, the demos aren't there for classic country or oldies anymore. Advertisers do not want to sell to us boomers anymore. They've made that perfectly clear. No advertising revenues, no radio station!
Caveman, you need to work on a signal that will get into Tucson and you will get those listeners. I enjoy those classic country hits I hear when I get down to Benson, and listen to the station on my trip back to Tucson, but after MM 279, forget it! The only thing that's solved the Classic Country issue is Sirius XM and Willie's Roadhouse.

In order for caveman to upgrade his signal to cover tucson, would be to move it to 106.7, there is already stations at 97.5 and 97.9 in the tucson area that would run interference with him, I picked 106.7, cause KWSS out of phoenix is so low power it does not make it out of tempe, so if he did upgrade it and moved it more towards tucson, that would be the ideal dial position. Also he needs to throw in some more 80's, like Alabama, George strait, Reba, Earl Thomas Conley and the likes of those.

KHIL was using Jones satellite country last I checked. They were actually fun to listen too back when they were live and local. But, as bobjlv pointed out, their signal is Tucson is not very good.

KAVV is a nice mix and I hope they don't add more 80s. It's a shame the FCC approved the 97.5 in Marana which killed KAVV in Tucson. It would be nice if they streamed.

Not necessarily in order of importance:
1) KHIL in Willcox is new country on the satellite 24/7. They rank number 22 in the Cochise County Arbitron. They are way too weak to show up in Tucson.
Many Willcox people prefer FMs in Safford. A feature on KHIL is allowing local businesses to record announcements that they listen to KHIL and those spots are aired for free. I've never heard that anywhere else.

2) Streaming is in the works for the Benson station.

3) 106.7 would be very difficult to use in Tucson because there's a Class C station on that frequency in Nogales, Mexico. Protecting it would be no simple matter.
Many years ago the management of the Benson station gave up on reaching Tucson though there are several channels that might be used. Ted Tucker has his sights on every channel that might serve Tucson and he'd come up with an alternative proposal that the FCC would like better. Cherry Creek Radio learned that lesson when they tried to move KZMK from Sierra Vista to Tanque Verde. Anyone wanting to move a station into Tucson had better budget half a million dollars in attorneys' fees.

4) There are several exising stations in Tucson that could improve their numbers by going with Classic Country but the corporations that own them would never risk something unproven. They'd rather create another Edge, a Zone or a Star and bore everyone to death. Either that or tell their listeners to turn off their radios and get audio from their cell phones.

This is the issue with corporate radio. If it's not risky, then put it on the air and sell the heck out of it.

Could the death of terrestrial radio (in it's existing format...) die within the next couple of generations?

Reference one of The Beloit College Mindset List's entries from this year: "15. Having grown up with MP3s and iPods, they never listen to music on the car radio and really have no use for radio at all."

if caveman 977 is indeed going to stream online, can you guys please use tune in radio? if possible, its a wonderful app to listen to, even from a cell phone, if your sponsor will support it. :) :)
also can you work on updating your playlist with a fresh coat of paint, that being more 80's country like Oakridge boys, Alabama, Reba, Exile, Nitty gritty dirt band, Rosanne Cash, Kathy Mattea, Earl Thomas Conley, and George Strait.? anything prior to 1990, would be great, us 35+ crowd would appreciate it.
