Bring Back KEWS

Re: Bring Back KEWS

That ship sailed a LOOOOOOONG time ago.

Re: Bring Back KEWS

There was a kinda sorta KEWS a year ago.
Of course it was a super Tiny Part 15 Station in McKinney, that was oldies.
;D :D

Re: Bring Back KEWS

Houston's News92FM launches at 5am Monday morning 11/21. Stream should be up at www.news92fm.com.

We'll see if it succeeds. Much needed in the market, but not sure Radio One has the finances to keep it going. Expensive format.

There have been posts in other threads on this board about what "The Cloud" will have to surrender. IIRC, it will only be one (1700AM) and they are not "surrendering" it. They are going to put it in a trust. They will no longer own it (the trust will) but they will retain control of it. IMHO, that kinda circumvents the whole "you can only own (control) x number of stations in a market" concept.

Re: Bring Back KEWS

I wouldn't mind grabbing 1700 for myself.
But I'm certain I do not have the cash for it :D

Maybe someday, Mighty 1700 KKLF!

Just for the record, when a station is put into trust, the previous owner can't legally "retain control of it." The previous owner isn't allowed to make any programming or personnel decisions and cannot take any profits the station earns until after it has been divested to a new permanent owner. The trust is required to have separate management and, if it uses programming or other services supplied by the previous owner, it has to pay fair market value for that programming and services. Of course, the trustee is reimbursed for his operating expenses if they're over the amount the station is bringing in, but the previous owner isn't allowed to dictate how the trustee must operate.

If you've never worked in a situation like that, I can tell you it's miserable. When your station is put into trust, you won't get any extra money thrown at your for promotions. Your benefits also become more expensive, and you can say goodbye to your company match on your 401(k) if you still have one of those. You probably won't even be allowed to socialize with your former co-workers until the divestiture has been worked out. Most operators try very hard to make sure there are no questions over who operates the stations in trust.

Re: Bring Back KEWS

All News would work in the DFW area on either FM or AM (as long as the AM was strong enough)
There would need to be a real commitment though to doing full 24 hour news, weather and traffic. That would require a lot of reporters and editors. I think KRLD could do it with some staff additions. It's not that such a station would rocket into the top 10 or anything like that, but it could be marketed properly to become a consistent performer with good demos and solid sales.

Re: Bring Back KEWS

All you have to do, to have enough to say, to slow down the number of words spoken per minute.

The rapid fire pace of most of the news stories is not appealing.

You can speak quickly for a short statement, but then you have to give it a rest. But this pedal to the metal all the time is a distraction.

I quickly turn the dial from that nonsense.

You hear it most at the top of the hour, when they can't give read you the news/sports headlines fast enough.

What a horrible trend.

Bill Bennett in the morning has a good pace.

Radio is always trying to "cram" down it's product to often.

They must encourage this high rate of talk. That Golic character on ESPN's Mike & Mike in the morning has got to stop drinking so much caffeine.... he's just too much, especially in the morning !!
