BRING BACK KSJO !

Bob Michaels, by the way, is actually Bob Coates (sp) who was at KBAY for years and years-until just recently. ... Chris Lance, as everyone knows, has been at many California stations...

Good knowledge, Raydio!

That should be Bob Michaels = Bob Kohtz.

And Chris Lance, if my memory is correct, was the last voice heard on 610/KFRC ("Requestopher Lance") before Family Radio took over.

I think ACTIVE ROCK/AOR can still work in the Bay Area if it's done right, for example if it more AOR style with out the heavy rotations of Slipnot, Metallica and Disturbed.Tell me if I'm wrong ,but didn't the Bay Area have 6 AOR stations in the early 80's.(KSAN 94.9, KMEL 106.1, KRQR 97.3, KOME 98.5, KSJO 92.3, and KFOG 104.5) all at the same time.

I think KSAN went country pretty early in the 80s. But everything else is correct. I would say KRQR "The Rocker!" was King of the Mountain at that time. Great Jocks like Peter B Collins, John MaCrae, Mercy Hawks, Mimi Chen...And a great overall sound. Mercy Hawks...a great talent and one of the nicest guys in radio. Don't think he's in the biz anymore.

Still remember when that consultant came in in 1989 and told them to change from "The Rocker" to "The Wolf". Ratings plummeted...That was the beginning of The End.

Could we add 98.9 MC, KQAK, aka "The Quake, FM 99" to that mix? Or was it not AOR enough?
If we can, that would've been SEVEN stations doing AOR for awhile...whew!!

KSAN changed in 1981...I knew my Sunday-night, four-hour "Dr. Demento" shows were through when I started
hearing Waylon and Willie on KSAN with no forewarning. (I was in Lodi at the time, and didn't see the Chronicle
Pinkie at the time, or see any SFO TV channels report KSAN's change.)...

Yup...when KRQR - born at Midnight the day after the 49ers beat the Bengals in the 1982 Super Bowl - dropped
"The Rocker" moniker, that was the beginning o' the end for that station, too...

Actually, the stations mentioned above by kenrayc would NOT have been doing AOR at the same time, as
KSAN had already gone country in '81, prompting KFOG's change to AOR well over a year later...

KMEL became Top-40 in, what, 1984?

And KTIM, San Rafael, (100.9/1510) was still AOR until about 1983, no?
When I visited KCBS-FM (later KRQR) July 21, 1981, the Public Service Gal raved about KTIM to me and a few
buddies. We had passed our FCC first-class-license test that day, and we partook a coupla tours afterward...

And let's not forget that other, long-forgotten AOR station of the early-1980s: 103.7, KSFX, which eventually
became KGO-FM and simulcast 810 AM part of the time...although KSFX never knew a format it could hold onto
for an extended time period...

When did KRQR use The Wolf moniker? I moved here in the early 90s and they were calling themselves The Rocker at that time. Although I do remember an old billboard of theirs that had an image of a wolf on it.

They used the Wolf briefly, I think, in 1990 or 91. Just awful decision making. Their ratings were trending downward (in Winter!) and they panicked. Brought in the consultant, changed from The Rocker to The Wolf, realized fairly quickly (but way too late) what a horrible idea it was, and went back to the Rocker.

The wildest Radio days in my career! What a line up: Zeb Norris, Perry Stone , Laurie Roberts, Gary Poole, Patty Martin, Billy Vega....those were the days!

Ahhh, those were the days!

You forgot to mention two of the most notable radio personalities in Bay Area radio, Paul "The Lobster" Wells, and Steven Seaweed, who were both there at that time.

I used to work in a Fotomat booth (remember those, lol) in San Lorenzo back in January of 1982 when KRQR, "The Bay Area Rocker", made it's debut at 97.3 FM (now KLLC, "Alice @ 97.3")

During the 12 noon to 1:00 pm slot I would call Steven Seaweed once a month to make a request on the "World Famous Hot Lunch".

Here it is 27 years later, and I still make my monthly call to the "Weedman", only now the "World Famous Hot Lunch" is heard daily from 12 noon to 1:00 pm on "107.7, The Bone".

Long live rock on the radio!

Cheers!

Shame on me for not mentioning Steven Seaweed....One of the best jocks ever, IMO...and one of the nicest guys ever. Just a smooth voice, great production chops, and a great guy. He wouldn't remember me...but I met him a few times in the Rocker days...

What ever became of Perry Stone? I think he got fired from KSJO from a Girl Scout Joke? Not Sure? He later replaced Alex Bennett over at KITS LIVE 105 ever so briefly.

This may or may not answer your question, Sam, but two years ago,
Perry was an O.M. for a group of stations in North Carolina...

Interesting reading!
The article says Perry was fired by KSJO "after he allegedly encouraged a local Brownie troop
to embezzle money from the sale of their cookies."

That was management's line at the time, and he did make remarks along those lines. But the truth is, They couldn't sell his show. Despite incredible ratings, the business community didn't want to touch him.

Weed really is one of the very best, along with Bob Keller in Sacto (at The Eagle these days). Nice guys, great chops, and similar styles, although I don't think they've spent much time listening to each other.

Another favorite jock of mine is Big Ric Stewart.

These guys give me something to aim for...

I used to listen to KSJO when they streamed online....a great rock station compared to some of the stuff in my local area at the time.
