I thought the best news relative to the new ESPN station is that the Jim Rome show comes as part of the package to Boston. The show is also carried on 790 out of Providence and I used to listen when I worked down that way. I grew to like the Rome show far more than the local shows, and I consider myself as provincial as the average Boston sports fan/listener.

Give the show a chance if you're new to it. It took me several listens just to get the lingo down - but beyond the lingo is sometimes hysterical humor and always good sports insights, sometimes from the callers and sometimes from the host.

I listened a little today and Boston was a very hot topic, as the callers ("clones") were responding to the introduction of a new market.

Was surprised that 1510 never picked up Rome.

Yes, it's a non-SNR show, but it would've been a nice add. If they'd moved Andleman to mornings and aired Rome leading into Diehards, I'm thinking they may have actually cracked Arbitron.

I have heard the Rome's syndicator is paying ESPN Radio a great deal to carry the show. Rome doesn't win ratings, a local lineup does. Boston listeners can care less about the Sandiego Padres and USC Football..they care about the Red Sox. ESPN Radio Boston, if they do not have any local shows will not be successful.

Rack Him...

Here's my problem with the Rome Show...

After interviews, he seems to be trying to convince himself that it was a great interview..."Nice Job...That Was Epic".

Too many cliche inside-isms. "Have a Take..Do Not Suck...You Will Get Run...Rack Him...Bang Your Monkey..." It just sounds contrived.

And..the best of all. Rome's reading a script.

It's obvious. You can hear him turning pages.

That being said. It's an entertaining show, if you're into it. I listened every day when I was in Columbus, OH and Sacramento.

"Smack Off" day is the best. Boston callers should make a nice contribution to the program. And he even had "Butch" on a bunch of times before he died.

Yes, it will be _marginally_ successful at best--low ratings but low
overhead. People may tune in from time to time to see what they're
talking about but yes, this is a very provincial sports town and
people want to hear about the local teams. They did hint about bringing
on some local content though, and maybe that may boost them a bit.
Certainly not WEEI numbers, of course.

I did tune in to Mike and Mike for a few minutes and they were talking baseball including the Sox hopes that Schilling can move back to the starting rotation
and Foulke will resume closer duties, etc. Sports talk radio that actually
talks about sports!

Jim Rome read some emails from Boston listeners (and took a call from one
who was glad he was finally on it Boston--the caller "had to go down to
Rhode Island to catch you before"...though I do know 790 does come in fairly
well south of Boston so I don't know if you have to go all the way down
into the Ocean State. Even north of Boston, WSKO comes in a bit. Boston
listeners (and some from other parts of the country) made fun of the fact we
don't pronounce our r's. ("Whatta you, re-TAHHHHHH-ded?" :) )
