"Bringing HD Radio to the Masses"

"New Apple Patent for iPod Wireless Transmission"

"According to Macsimum News, Apple has filed a patent for a new wireless VHF/FM/RDS transmitter that will be added to the iPod."

"In Chicago, probably 3/5 of the major FM stations send song title and station ID information over RDS. It’s just a text datastream that’s slipped over the FM signal. A lot of cars already support it, but most people don’t even know it’s there, or know how to turn it on. RDS is also somewhat slow, maybe 20 char/sec on a good day. iPod sending song titles over RDS would be killer, but I wonder if it’s fast enough to handle UI tasks like menus."

Has HD Radio missed-the-boat ?

My only experience with FM modulators is the one in my XM Roady 2 and it's terrible. Of course the audio on XM is terrible period, so maybe it's just garbage in - garbage out, but at least it's static free when connected to the line in on my car's stereo.

I really don't understand the fascination with RDS and I don't understand the comparison to HD. HD Radio natively provides station name, title and artist info and a lot more.

There might be a little gee whiz factor in having my iPod display title and artist info on the radio via RDS, but it really won't be all that useful.

First, if it's on my iPod, I can usually identify the song within a few seconds of it starting anyway - I paid for it and put it there after all. Second, the iPod has a beautiful, full color backlit display. I can read it with no problems. Third, if I'm using my iPod in the car, I don't use an FM modulator anyway. I use the line-in on my radio.

"HD Radio Texting"

"One of the most exciting things about HD Radio– besides the fact that it just sounds so darn good – is the fact that it makes it possible for stations to broadcast text messages. HD Radio's text messages can be as simple as the name of a song and the artist or weather information. HD Radio stations could also broadcast commercials or important news as text messages. Some may elect to provide traffic alerts. either as text messages or as digital information -- free or for a monthly fee."

The HD Radio Cartel is touting the features of RDS, as something new to HD Radio, which is absolutely false. HD Radio, just adds low-bitrate side channels, of the same, repetitive terrestrial radio programming - hardly worth a $500,000,000 ad campaign, and all the HD Radio shilling, that is going on ! That's my fascination, with the HD Radio farce ! :D

Ahhh. Now I understand.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. To debate this point with you is a fool's game. It doesn't matter what anyone says, you're going to endlessly say the opposite whether it's true or not.

The main reason, I started this thread, was because another main focus for 2007, for the HD Radio Cartel, is trying to get HD Radio into iPod-type devices - from the article, that does not look promising, due to the technical challenges, and since Apple has chosen RDS-FM, not IBOC-FM, for the iPod.
