Bringing Smooth Jazz to AM

Interesting article of how WCWA 1230 in Toledo is bringing SJ to AM.

I know all of us have been dismayed at the disappearance of SJazz in city after city on FM. Exiling the format to HD side channels is not going to work for now due to the small number of HD Radios in the hands of consumers. But most of the population have AM radios and can, therefore, readily access this music.

This is a brave move putting music on AM but it's possible that it could be a win-win for both the format and the band.

DON'T forget WCIN (AM) in Cincinnati which still airs smooth jazz. Alchemy Broadcasting (Dusty Rhodes and Brian Kauffmann)which operates Oldies 1160 WDJO is buying the station. It is hoped that the jazz format remains.

See Cincy boards for "WCIN/WDJO" posts

Gene Kirby's smooth jazz format is expanding to 24/7 dropping the graveyard shift oldies on low-power WRPO 93.5 FM in Russells Point (southwest of Lima) at Indian Lake coming in February. C'mon smooth jazz-ers..send Gene some money as a donation or a corporate underwriting and maybe he'll someday set up an online stream for the rest of us outside his 100 watt signal.

With many smooth jazzers dropping like flies as of late, I have no problem with the idea. The question is will people go there? Such a move was tried in New Hampshire on WEZS, but they failed. WCIN as we all know is hanging in there, but for how much longer? It's a damned shame that Jones 'pulled the plug' on their SJ format. I wish the gang at WCWA the best of luck!

Here in the Baltimore-Washington corridor, smooth jazz has been gone since WSMJ bit the dust. I could see where 1260 in Washington might make an OK outlet. In Baltimore maybe 1300 could make a go at it (probably unlikely, although they already have appropriate call letters)! Even 1370 in B'more could do it although their night signal leaves everything to be desired.

Let me reiterate once more: Whatever happens, if SJ is to ever return to the airwaves, LIMIT THE NUMBER OF REMAKES AND PLAY MORE ORIGINAL MATERIAL!

weird little University station that simulcasts a weak signal on AM (probably carrier current) in rural Pennsylvania called Kutztown University Radio. they play a mixture of smooth jazz, traditional jazz, and some pop oldies during the day. then student block shows later in the day. i've heard lots of forgotten smooth jazz clunkers on there like billy joe walker jr. "midnight romance." and they have keith riker doing liners. i like it. http://kur.kutztown.edu/
