British Oldies

I found a great internet oldies (60s-80s) station that plays lots of songs that were only hits in the UK. For example they are playing Ian Durry-Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick...#1 UK, the only U.S station I ever heard it on was KROQ.

Interesting how many American artists had British hits that never charted in the U.S..I heard this station play Syretta-Your Kiss Is Sweet..It sounded fairly modern, I guessed it was one of her later songs and was surprised to discover it was from 1975.

Another one I enjoyed was Gonzalez-Haven't Stopped Dancing Yet...I remember listening to it on AT40 in early 1979, it charted it in the 30s for a few weeks,,,I never heard it anywhere else (even when it was a current) until now.

Used to hear it from time to time on KKSN in the late 1990s/early 2000s, usually at nights when Steve Lloid was doing his thing. But then, he'd also occasionally play "Martian Hop" which I don't think any of the others there ever touched!

And he'd play it off the 45 yet (you could hear the surface noise and distortion on the air.) I don't believe it's ever been officially released to CD; if it has, I have yet to come across it.
 
Well the tune went to # 16 on Billboard Hot 100, so it got some decent airplay nationally and on Canadian stations. That was the strange part of that record, it was a hit there 1st, printed there, but the boys were from Wildwood, NJ. Oh those Wildwood Days! The local stations, WCMC, WMID and WOND played it.
 
Don't know how Steve Lloid pulled that off ...KKSN-FM didn't have a turntable in the control room in the 1990's or 2000's. By the late '90's they didn't even have cart machines.
 
There are a couple of British stations/networks that are the UK version of the oldies format. They'll occasionally dip into the 60s and 70s in their regular rotations, but are mostly 80s based. Some of their special programming on weekends goes back a little further. Capital Gold was probably the biggest of these. I think they recently changed their name, but in any event you can listen to the terrestial British Oldies online. BBC radio also has a nice weekend show where they spotlight a particular year.

My daughter lives in the UK, so between her and business, I usually get over there once or twice a year. According to my son-in-law (British), one of the reasons 50s music isn't heard much over there is because there's no widespread fondness or nostalgia for that decade. As he explains it, a lot of British society was still struggling to recover from World War II, so it wasn't a particularly happy time.
