Brittney Shipp - Meteorologist???

I caught some of GMAZ (Friday I think) and the first segment with Britt, her graphic went up with the title Meteorologist under her name. The later segments it went back to 3TV Forecaster. On Monday evening, she was filling in for Royal and was introduced as Meteorologist Brittney Shipp.

So has she completed her training and certification so she can be called meteorologist? Her knowledge level sure does not indicate that (as compared to when April completed her training). Or is this in response to Brittney being one of the more popular weather personalities as compiled by a local magazines "best of" polls?

I believe that she has completed her education now. I believe it was announced sometime within the past month or two. Of course, I may just be having a "pre-senior" moment.

When Brittney filled in for Royal Normal on his 6:30 pm weather update tonight she just intro'd herself as "Brittney" and there was no title on-screen.

Brittney did complete her degree/training, I think it was in October or November. Tess Rafols announced it (several times) during a Saturday GMAZ.

Thanks, brian4, I thought it had been mentioned! Apparently, my memory will last a few more years. :D

Interestingly, it seems that Brittney gets to fill in for Royal more than April does (at least when I'm watching 3TV).

It only makes sense for Brittney to fill in for Royal. It would throw April off her typical morning schedule. I know some people would be paranoid that they are the "number two" person and should always substitute when #1 is on vacation. Hopefully KTVK fosters true teamwork in their workplace.

Also, I noticed that Brittney doesn't have the AMS seal next to here name. Royal and April do.

hhaaahahhahahahaah this is the funniest thing I've seen all year! Thanks for the laugh.
The answer is no, they don't. Any news team with Tara Hitchcock on it has no team at all.

Brittney has to take the test to become AMS certified. Give her a few months to study and take the exam.

That's for sure!!! She is the diva of Phoenix local morning television (can't come in before 6am, tells everyone else's business but gets upset when Scott tells her business, seems to have little chemistry with Kaley, brash and obnoxious, etc.).

She can't take the AMS test. Completing the Miss. State certification program no longer qualifies you to take it (a change they made a couple years ago I think). She'll have to get an actual bachelor's degree in atmospheric science or related that includes math classes the Miss. State program doesn't in order to even be eligible to take it.

TV meteorologists need a degree to read the weather forecast off a teleprompter?

How is this different than my local DJ doing the same on radio?

I agree they don't necessarily need it, but it's not true that mets "read off a teleprompter." Most mets make their own forecasts, build their own graphics, interpret the models themselves etc. Then they just explain it to audiences ad lib, there's no prompter invovled.
