Broadcast network coverage of Iran bombing

Here is Newsnations ratings for the Iran strikes. We mentioned this in other threads on how Newsnations ratings are often beaten up by local Nexstar owned stations like KTLA, WPIX, WGN, KRON, KSWB in the ratings. but here are the ratings.

The network broke into coverage Saturday evening and remained live through the overnight hours and into Sunday, leveraging its weekday anchor lineup to deliver continuous updates.

Coverage began Saturday night, with Chris Cuomo anchoring from 7 to 9 p.m. ET, followed by Leland Vittert from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. ET. NewsNation continued with live overnight programming from 2 to 7 a.m. ET.

During Saturday’s prime-time block from 8 to 11 p.m. ET, the network drew 200,000 total viewers and 41,000 adults in the 25-54 demographic, according to Nielsen data. Viewership peaked at 10 p.m. ET during coverage of former President Donald Trump’s national address, which averaged 256,000 viewers overall and 68,000 in the 25-54 demo, the Nielsen ratings revealed.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when the news broke, didn't Nexstar stations carry coverage from whatever network they usually carry?

Yes in those cases Nexstar stations like KSEE (NBC affiliate), KLAS (CBS affiliate), WTNH (ABC affiliate), KTXL (Fox Affiliate) will follow their respective network coverage. That can also partially explain why News Nation gets low ratings too. It’s not just the CW affiliates owned by Nexstar that are beating NewsNation. The CW affiliates tend to use local news staff in those cases.

There are mandatory NewsNation promos on the affiliates' local newscasts

Newsmax, NewsNation, do those even count?

Not if the ratings are accurate. Newsmax (and the other diginets with a similar bias) were created to ride the coattails of the growth of conservatives in politics, then pretty much went all in when Trump was elected the first time.

NewsNation was created in 2000 as a repurposing of the existing cable/satellite feed of WGN America, which because of SYNDEX and other restrictions was by 2014 only carrying WGN's local news and other syndicated programming not seen on channel 9. They started with a single three-hour newscast on the WGN America channel and gradually expanded in 2021. I don't have the cable ratings at my disposal but I am told they are running distantly behind Fox News and MSNBC.

way below the others, News Nation is lower than Newsmax. I think NewsNation averages around 150k and Newsmax as of lately gets between 200k and 300k.

NewsNation has increased its ratings since becoming a full-fledged 24 hour cable news network in June 2024.

Ratings for NewsNation primetime are sporadic, at best. According to information from Programming Insider, "Cuomo", hosted by ex-CNN anchor Chris Cuomo got 254,000 viewers on June 25. Leland Vittert's "On Balance" series (which replaced "Dan Abrams Live" in February) had 136,000 viewers on June 26 and the true crime focused "Banfield", featuring Ashleigh Banfield, had 108,000 the same day.
