Broadcast stations moving to different cable channel numbers

In the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre market, three cable companies in the area are moving their CBS and NBC stations to different channel numbers after being positioned in the same channel position for a great number of years.

Before I switch to DISH, my cable company(Service Electric) carries WYOU-TV 22 on Channel 2 and WBRE-TV 28 on Channel 3. WYOU moved to channel 12 and WBRE to channel 13. This goes for two other cable TV companies in the region. Channel 2 is now TV Guide Channel and 3 is now the message board/weather channel(not TWC).

Has anyone else experience a similiar setup on your cable system?

Well, two years ago, when I stupidly dropped Dish for cable, WJSU 40 (ABC) was on ch. 21 of my cable system. When they moved HBO/Cinemax off analog to prevent the whole town from getting it for free (they'd ran out of lockout devices years before), WJSU took over Cinemax's position on 4 and TV Land was added on 21.

Could this be a replacement for compensation? For instance Channel 50 WPWR (before it was owned by Fox) waived any compensation for their programs IF the cable company would agree to put them on Cable Channel 8.

Why? Because Cable 8 is between WGN Channel 9 and WLS-TV (ABC) both Powerhouses. Especially since WLS airs Oprah at 9am and sets the whole day.

It's my understanding that OTA stations can demand that they be placed on the same cable channel as their OTA channel. That is unless it is technically unfeasable.

Like for instance Comcast aired Channel 2 WBBM (CBS) on Channel 22 claiming interference. Oddly enough Prime Cable (before Comcast bought it) airs WBBM OTA Channel 2 on Cable channel 2 with no problem. And when Comcast got ahold of Prime Cable's market it kept WBBM on Channel 2 for that market
______________

WBBM had to do with cable leaks. There are leaks in the system, so the OTA signal gets into the cable likne, slightly ahead of the cable signal, so it causes really bad interference. For this reason, WBBM was carried on cable channel 3 for many years.

Then WBBM-DT signed on on channel 3. All of a sudden, the digital signal was doing the same thing--causing a lot of interference with the cable signal. So Comcast and WBBM agreed to trade WBBM on 3 with C-SPAN on 22 so WBBM would have a clean signal.

If Comcast would fix the leak in their system, they could put it on channel 3 (I don't know about 2), but it's cheaper to just trade the channels.

The Problem is not just the cable system itself, its also a problem at the customer's in-home connections with tv transmitters near-by. VCRs, DVDs, etc, are not always connected right to cable tv and cause interference with local tv. My Local Cable System in Suffolk, VA near Norfolk has WTKR-3(CBS) on 4, WSKY-4(ind.) on 10, WAVY-10(NBC) on 11, and WVEC-13(ABC) on 12. I don't see this changing until the analog stations sign-off.
______________

Comcast had to move their cable boxes in Chicago from Channel 3 to Channel 4 when WBBM-DT signed on.
