Friends another great newsman was let go this week, but this time not from KOGO, but from KyXy. Seems KyXy let go of long-time news man John Q. Lawrence. John is a great news man and a fine broadcaster. Hopefully John will find a new job soon.

KyXy is shortening it's news casts and sending people to the website to increase web traffic.

John didn't report the news -- he wrote the news and delivered it with conviction. Best damn newscast in market. This just can't suck enough.

John is one of the few true broadcast journalists. Here is a list (in my humble opinion) of broadcast journalists that are the best:

Ian Rose
John Q. Lawrence
Wade Douglas
Deb Welch
Mike McGregor
Marilyn Heider

These are the people that have journalistic integrity, that can actually write and sound fantastic on the air. They all add an air of professionalism that is lacking in all mediums today.

And watch out Ian and Deb you are the last two on the list that are still working !

Ah more brilliance from Charlie Quinn. When I was at the Planet he told me to cut the newscast to three lines - that's right, not three stories, three lines.

The insane thing is: KYXY's morning team has been a winning team and John was an integral part of the team. KYXY was a success before Quinn got there and it's stayed successful despite his presence because he generally did not change most of what was created before he got there. If CBS needs to save money, cutting 25% of a winning show doesn't seem like the best way to do it.

Kevin Dean has to be nervous.

As for John Q finding another gig: where? Metro News & Traffic is pretty much it, and their pay has to be less than half of what he made at KYXY.

Charlie Quinn puts the spin on the "firing" of John Q: "While the definition of his duties has changed, John continues to be the News & Public Affairs Director of KyXy and KSCF. John has NOT been fired by CBS Radio. He continues to produce and anchor our weekly hour long public affairs show Concerning San Diego airing on both KyXy and KSCF."

So, is he making the same salary or is he being paid just for a one hour show? If they knocked him down from fulltime pay and being part of a daily morning show to being a part-time producer of a Sunday morning show then that is a damn creative way to not fire someone while actually firing them.

Call Bill O'Reilly. Yeah, Bob, I read that too. Dave Mason (KOGO) is in the same situation. Morning drive to doing a once a week (and very good mind you) Beatles show on 101.5 KGB. Long live the part timers; they'll save radio. Yeah, that's the spin.

Companies just don't want to pay 401k's or medical benefits anymore! So get sick and die on your own time, but corporate ethics don't exist anymore. But hey make sure the CEO and all VP's get their multi-million dollar bonus for ruining (not running, ruining) a great company!

Hey Broadcasters,

I want to thank all for so many kind and supportive words and comments. May I use you for references? <g>

Without getting into the nitty and gritty the how and the why I was beached I can assure you producing the public affairs show isn't going to make the mortgage payment. It 'is' a welcome supplement though and I'm happy I was given the option.

Cheers!
John Q. Lawrence

I heard John Q Lawrence on KOGO over the weekend. He sounds so good there.
If they were smart they'd put him on fulltime. It's what a newsman is supposed to sound like.
Still not quite sure what the hell KYXY was thinking letting him go. The guy they have on with Sonny & Susan sounds pretty amateurish. But I guess that's what you'd expect from a traffic service. KYXY/CBS get some nads and smarts and bring him back.

Johnny will land feet up......first class journalist.....even classier hombre...

We luv 'ya, Johnny,

Land feet up?????? And where would that be...certainly not in the ever diminishing world of San Diego radio news, where the only jobs are low-paid gigs with Metro News or Clear Channel's Airwatch doing traffic (and maybe some news snippets) for 7-1 clerk wages.

Shadow News and Traffic started killing the radio news business long before Jacor/Clear Channel came along and put the final spike in it. How many "radio news directors" are there in San Diego now - maybe one or two (if you count Cliff Albert at CC, who has long since ceased to be a newsman). I think really KPBS is it.

Gee......Kyxy's, always in the top 5, morning show dropped to 13th with a .9 share of the audience. The only thing that changed was the news. Where is John Q Lawrence when you really, really need him?
