I can't say that I've had exactly the same experience, and it seems to depend on the station for me. I believe that the difficulties I have getting several distant FM stations in HD is because of relatively strong first-adjacent stations that partially trounce the digital ensembles. Of the 18 stations I should be able to get in HD, 4 of them are tough to lock and 2 are impossible with an indoor dipole, even when the analog counterpart is quiet (in stereo). I even get the RDS info for these stations.
However, I think people 30 to 60 miles out have a historical expectation that they might need something more than a stock whip antenna to get FM stations. They are more apt to tack a twinlead dipole to the wall, or use an attic or roof antenna. Everyone closer will get most or all of the FM HD Radio signals reliably on stock antennas, even with receivers that have moderate internal RFI issues.
