Broadcasters Hall of Fame

I was curious to check out the posts on this board regarding the recent Buffalo Broadcasters Hall of Fame inductions.

Suprisingly, not a word.

I was sure, someone (other than me), would throw in their two cents about the annual event.

Just for the record, KB legend Dick Biondi, Shane Gibson and newsman Jim McLaughlin were among the honorees from the radio side. Jacquie Walker and Vic Baker from TV. Don Angelo AKA Del Manning was honored for his forty four year career in both radio/TV and management. WUFO was congratulated on its Golden Anniversary.

It seemed rather odd that no one even mentioned it. Perhaps, its because the honorees on the radio side have been gone from the local scene for a few decades. Or could it be ...that a large percentage of this board is composed primarily of younger broadcasters and wannabes who don't remember these people and really don't care?

If it's the later.. then it's a sad commentary on our industry today.

Buffalo was one of the top markets in the country and produced some great talents over the years. In the day, if you were fortunate enough to work in the Buffalo market you were considered in the BIG time.

Buffalo's broadcast history may someday be preserved in a museum and hopefully, future generations will understand the contributions that were made right here Buffalo, that in some cases changed broadcast history.

"KB legend Dick Biondi, Shane Gibson and newsman Jim McLaughlin were among the honorees from the radio side"

All great choices, and all of them make me ask one question--shouldn't they all have been enshrined long ago?

Seems to me the Buffalo Broadcasters Hall of Fame should swing their doors open ASAP for all of the best broadcasters in the biz, to encourage everyone to keep working to match the standards people like these folks have set. It's sad that the Hall wasn't in existence when Jim McLaughlin (who taught so many of us what we know about news and talk) passed away...it would have been nice for him to hear how much he was respected by his peers. It's a good thing that Shane Gibson and Dick Biondi ARE able to enjoy the homor--and wouldn't it be good to bring Brother Shane BACK to the Buffalo airwaves? (We probably can't hope for Dick Biondi to return to western NY since he's currently enjoying living-legend status in Chicago as night personality on WLS-FM.)

It's more likely that there are a lot more people involved in the Buffalo Broadcasters who are retired (willing or not) broadcasters and/or wannabes than there are current Buffalo broadcasters. This topic has been discussed before on these pages - probably about a year ago. There's a dearth of broadcasters from the current generation in the HoF - even after decades of service in the market.

They may be trying to address that situation with a new set of awards, Buffalo Excellence In Media Awards:

Still, it seems that there are a lot more HoF members on the radio side who either permanently relocated to a cemetary plot, or who left the area a generation or more ago, than are still on the air in WNY.

The Hall of fame has inducted approximately 100 members in the fifteen years of its exsistence. We all have our favorite nominees, but to open wide the doors and award every potential nominee would create bedlam. Of course they could send everyone who ever sat behind a mic or occupied an office at a radio staion the award and those who didn't feel they deserved it could return it.

It would be fair to say there's not one undeserving member of the Hall, but each year there seems to be a notable broadcaster who should have been inducted years prior, but didn't make the cut. Dick Biondi is a prime example. It took a long while for him to get the nod and should have been inducted years ago. To some, there's a degree of incongruity that Biondi would go in on the same ballot as Gibson. This is not a criticism, simply an observation. Each honoree is talented in his own right, yet from different eras of broadcasting.

As noted, this issue came before the court of opinion here a while ago and the nomination/voting process was explained in detail by a few of the board members who regularly post here. It's said that voting by members of the organization shape each year's ballot. As to the inaugural question of this thread, it could be posters and readers are content to let sleeping dogs lie, perhaps for good reason.

From a more callous perspective: Could it be that few readers/posters are interested in (a) the topic, or (b) what's been written here in general?

It seems the number of participants in these discussions has declined over the year. Posters like 'Cowbell, 'Skulker, alw, Caveman, Freebird and 13th Floor Rand were regular contributors who added to the vitality and diversity of the board. Did continuing contributors/posters (like me) become tiresome and drive others away? Or have we all come to find this board the same old same old? Again, simply an observation and question.

Did you stop to consider that maybe, just maybe, the computers that replaced half of the air talent in this market are not capable of posting on an internet messageboard? Or maybe they are capable, but were driven away by all the negative comments about them?

Well stated. Considering how computers and technology have re-shaped the media, it's just a matter of time before Jack shows up on the board.

Yogodar...I believe you are correct....unless JP refutes it!
....as to the associated post :'(
