Broadway Bill Lee uses Asian stereotype on the air (Audio)

This was from earlier this week. He talks up "One Night In Bangkok" by speaking as if he was on a radio station in Bangkok:

"Hi, I'm Birr Ree... Me love you long time..."

I had no idea you could do this on the radio in 2021. And, during API Heritage Month, no less.

He'll be on the unemployment line in 3... 2... 1...
I just hope he doesn't reveal himself to be an unhinged right-winger after being shown the door and starts posting about "libtards" and "cancel culture." I don't think I've heard that kind of shtick on commercial radio since the '70s, the early '70s at that.

On his old account he's retweeted Ian Miles Cheong (pretty far right - sample recent quote "Glasgow is going to turn into Lahore with a heroin problem") and Raheem Kassam (Breitbart) and another right wing journalist mocking nurses for doing a dance break during the pandemic.

On his current active account he follows a lot of Fox News types, James Woods, Michelle Malkin etc.

On the other hand he's also supportive of masks, the vaccine and churches that chose not to meet in person during the pandemic.

Oh, man....great jock, one of my favorites, but that's horrific.

He got blown out at KFRC 38 years ago for a similar lack of judgement:

His video post from April 9 has a #StopAsianHate graphic on it.
In that article Bill Lee was called out for his AIDS Rant when Bill Lee was removed from San Francisco

Bill Lee is suddenly out at KFRC/San Francisco. Seems a couple of the guys at the station put together a spoof called the "AIDS Anthem," sung to the tune of "America The Beautiful." Bill played the thirty-second ditty on the air, and that was a big mistake. Given San Francisco's large gay population and the seriousness of the AIDS problem, Lee's lack of judgment in airing the tune was immediately rewarded with a set of personalized "walking papers" from station PD Gerry Cagle. Now, Bobby Ocean has gone fulltime, and Gerry is looking for one more jock for the KFRC lineup.

Reminds me a little of this story a few years ago when a San Francisco TV station was reporting on the crash of an Asiana flight. Someone in the control room as a prank made up some fake names for the pilots, supposedly someone from the station called the NTSB to verify the names and an intern or low level employee there supposedly verified them and the reporter read them on the air. Moments later they issued an apology and redaction. In the fallout, 3 veteran producers were terminated from the TV station, as was the employee at the NTSB who took the call from the station and supposedly verified the names.

All that said, you've got to be kidding me that this wasn't caught by ANYONE at that TV station before being put on the screen:

That kind of top-40 schtick hasn't been relevant in decades and unfortunately Bill sounds like a senile old man whose comedic sensibilities are still stuck in the 70's. Just because you could get away with it back then doesn't mean it was ever funny, and it's definitely not acceptable now. Sheesh.

Morton Downey got removed from Sacramento radio outlet KFBK for a racist rant against the Chinese decent nearly 4 decades ago. This removal lead to Rush Limbaugh radio fame in Sacramento according to this article.

Downey and his obnoxious act landed on his feet, at WMAQ 670 Chicago after getting fired in Sacramento.

Did Bill get fired?

What Bill did was try to be funny. It was out of taste and wrong. In context for the humor he has been used too, especially from “his era,” it is no different than Jim Carrey and his Fire Marshall Bill in an Asian Restaurant skit from In Living Color. Today, things are different. For sure. What allegedly happened with Dan Taylor was multi-level issues that were not attempts at humor. Two different situations. Should Bill be fired? Make a public apology and use it as a way to bridge the communities hurt by things like this?
I know one thing. Bill did not intend to hurt anybody. He is known for thinking these breaks up in the minutes before he executes them. I have presented all the facts that I know on this break and Bill’s context. The comments above are all valid personal reactions. Would anyone on here stand up for Bill? Or are we at the point of one strike/out? Just wanted to put this out there for further discussion.

Is it a story in the New York media, or did the bit fly by so quickly most people missed it?

As I said, I think Bill is a tremendous talent and one of my favorite jocks.

I also noted his #StopAsianHate hashtag on his social media posts.

But I think the only people who really have a say in where this goes should be the AAPI community. That’ll be a dialogue between them, Bill and Audacy management.
