Brockton's 91.7 Pirate Shut Down

GOOD!! They were also interfering with the station yours truly has a show on, 91.5 WBIM!

How did the transmitter transmit a spur on 120.6 from 91.7? Can't be simple intermodulation because Touch 106.1 would have to be co-sited with 91.7 in order for an intermodulation product to appear near 120.6.

There are lots of occupants of the RF spectrum that aren't necessarily on everyone's radar (I know, bad pun...). It could be a mixing product with something completely unrelated to the FM band. OTOH, it could be simply garbage spit out by a mistuned or overdriven final amplifier in the pirate's transmitter. No one ever said that pirates were technically competent.

could be a mixing product in some really crappy 2-transistors and a capacitor single-conversion hand-held VHF Airband HT from 1983. given the backwards compatible AM and installed base of crap equipment, i'm sure all sorts of nonsense can occur. listenig to Marine Band just a dozen MHz or two up from Air was absolutely wild during the ships week interms of intermod being rebroadcast etc. lots of NOAA WX in there too.

as for 91.7, it wasnt until the brockton bust that i ever heard a 91.7 pirate in boston. whack a mole? and the 91.5 guy - love you - will check out your stream, as theres already Alpha Omega Radio from Roxbury vs Curry College in Milton vs Tufts in Medford on that frequency fighting it out in a 3-way cacophony of noise here

The Boston (Dorchester) 91.7 pirate came on a few weeks ago as a "repeater" of the Brockton 91.7 at least most of the time, but it has continued to broadcast after the Brockton one was busted.

WUMB's 91.7 signal from Marshfield is now making it into Brockton. This shutdown of this pirate has gotten a fair amount of press. Might we see more pirates waling the plank.

Years ago the Globe reported a pirate (forget the freq...102.1?) called WHDL from Brockton got shut down. It was some kid, the joke was it stood for We had Hot Dogs for Lunch or something, and I remember getting them around Salem/Swampscott pretty well...the phone number they gave out
was a Brockton exchange. The error they made, the article had said, was they boosted their power
up to 80 watts or something, and people complained.
