Brokered Radio on 98.7 The Fan

Heard this morning at 8:30 AM, a guy trying to sell mortgages, going into detail about different rates and all that, and even gave a phone number to accept callers with questions.

No sports talk. Is this a bad sign for this station? Or would they rather do this rather than go with Yahoo Sports Radio as long as it's live and local?

I hope I'm just freaking out over nothing, as I'd love to see this station overtake WDAE.

A not unreasonable fear as it seems every spoken word station gives in sooner or later to the temptation of easy money. Political talk radio is a 12/5/240 format these days (sadly) but weekends are a big deal for sports talk and if they're down to this so early in the game...

One thing they and the competiton are up against is that for the moment we are a one sport town. MLB is done for the season here, hockey has shot itself in the skates, no one here likes the NBA, its too early for college hoops, and besides its USF picked 8th in the Big Least, so theres only so much football talk to go around.

I'm still impressed that they are more live and local than just about any other station in town.

As cheesy as some might think it to be, they might want to broker a Pro Wrestling Show until something better comes along. 1250 WHNZ had one, ironically hosted by the now late Mike Graham on Saturday nights, which butted up against the 330 pm college football games. It would still be brokered, but at least its an athletic activity which straddles the line with pop culture.

Don't laugh too loudly. I've heard Todd Wright segue through it, and he makes it work.

They may have a contract from before the format change. It may be a contractual obligation to run the show.
