Brooklyn Pirate on 99.1

For the past few nights and weekends there's been a pirate at 99.1 FM in the Brooklyn area wrecking the signal from STAR 99.1 (WAWZ). A friend of mine who works at WAWZ said that they're going to aggressively go after these guys. Has anyone heard this pirate? ???

I haven't heard the pirate, I am not surprised though. The unmitigated gall demonstrated by pirate radio stations. They don't even try to find an unused (not to be confused with available) frequency anymore. Good luck with the FCC. They seem to want to ignore the proliferation of pirates around NYC. This situation is so bad there are pirate stations competing with other pirates for a spot on the dial.

As I have maintained in other postings. This activity is illegal and needs to be severly curtailed.

On and off, I've caught pirates on the following frequencies recently:

87.9, 88.5, 88.7, 89.3, 89.7, 90.1 (several), 90.5, 91.9, 92.1, 94.3, 94.5, 95.1 (several, including a pirate station espousing Nazi rhetoric), 95.9, 96.1, 96.5, 97.5, 99.1, 99.9, 101.5, 101.7, 103.1, 103.9, 104.7, 105.5, 106.3, 107.9.

STAR 99.1 has a notice on their website about pirates on 99.1 FM. There are links to report it to the station and to the FCC.

I just don't get why people pirate today, when there's internet to deliver the staion to the listener with today.

But if they must pirate a station, wouldn't it be smarter to pirate from a border town?

This way the FCC can say "it's coming from Canada" and the CRTC can say "It's coming from the States" and getting caught is greatly reduced.

A pirate on the Canadian border would have a little difficulty reaching New York City, no?

However, back in the late 80s, some folks tried broadcasting off a ship that was anchored beyond the United States' territorial waters, inspired by similar pirates in Europe that did offshore broadcasts, primarily in the 60s and 70s (some still exist today, especially in the Mediterranean, targeting the Middle East). That still didn't stop the FCC, rightly or wrongly, from traveling there with boats and busting up that operation.

It would have quite a bit of difficulty since the Canadian border is approximately 350 miles from NYC. The signal would have to be huge and would need to blow through at least a half dozen other markets in the process.

The worst part is, its not the measly 20 watts they put out, but for the 10 miles of negligible signal they put out, they cancel out (create a null) 40 miles of a licensed stations pattern.

If someone wants to play DJ for a few hours a night, let them go through the legal process like legitimate broadcasters. They need to be shut down.

I think I should try this tee hee... I go to college 30 miles from the canadian border in VT..

Caught it the other night too.
Faded signal and was gone.
Haven't been able to get it or find it since.

The pirates just seem to get more and more brazen. I haven't been to Brooklyn lately -- is the Creole pirate at 90.9 FM http://www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php/topic,70706.0.html"]that I posted about[/url] still operating and interfering with WFMU (91.1)?

Of course, I bet if anybody can get the FCC up off their butts and over there to bust some Brooklyn pirates, it's the right-wing religious characters like the ones who operate Star 99.1. Hopefully while they're over there, they'll bust 90.9 too, if it's still around. And 89.3 and 89.7 for interfering with WSOU and WKCR. And the 90.5 pirate for interfering with WFUV. (And then they could come over to Newark and bust 96.1 and 96.5 for interfering with WQXR....)

Geez, that Nazi is still operating sometimes at 95.1? I heard that a few years ago from Newark and I figured it was just an unusual freak thing and that nobody would ever hear of it again. No such luck. They were doing a hateful white supremacist call-in talk show that was supposedly based out of Florida and supposedly being sent out over various pirates across the nation, if I remember correctly.

As for the 101.5 pirate, the other night I was trying to pick up NJ 101.5 from Manhattan as I headed towards NJ so I could listen to the traffic reports. Yes, it's a dicey proposition even without a pirate interfering, but I've done it before. NJ 101.5 used to come in pretty well in some areas of the borough, particularly the Upper West Side, but not now, with that 101.5 pirate on the air. That annoyed me. Not as bad as pirates messing with little non-comms who don't have big budgets or a lot of resources to lobby the FCC, though. And WFMU and WSOU are local this market, unlike NJ 101.5.
