brother john st john

Trapper 12 The last I knew, About two years ago Brother John (his real name is Roy Jans) was doing Mornings at WKYM 101.7 In Monticello Kentucky. He went back to where he started by doing that as He began his radio career there many years ago before Going to Larger markets such as Oak Ridge/ Knoxville. He also spent some time in the buisness in Floriida at WAPE (not sure what city that is in).

The morning show with Brother John (he still used that name there) was a short-lived thing at "KYM and they canned him and went with John Boy And Billy after just a few months.

Unfortunately, thats the most current info I have on him. I don't know what has happened to him or where he has landed after that. Maybe that is a start anyway. Someone else may know more.

he has been out of radio for some time and lives in Jacksonville. Another trophy head on the wall thanks to corporate radio

Apparently there are a lot of us "trophy heads on the wall" due to the almighty bottom line and creativity be well,.....thrown out the window corporate radio.

Thanks for the information. I've wondered myself what had happened to Brother John. I'm afraid the days of radio like that are over. The suits would rather pay minimum wage to some kid to babysit a voicetracking system than give a decent wage to those of us who have been around long enough to know how to do real radio. Sad. Why I'm out the buisness today.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately those days of radio are over. They have become systemized and sanitized and radio is the worse for it.

Whatever happened to Brother John St John? I remember him from the days when WOKI was a radio station.

I believe Brother John came back here to Ktown in 2002, and did evenings on "MAX 105.3" which was the all 80's channel from 2001 until it switched over to a "AAA Format" in September of 2003.

Then I believe he worked at WIVK for a little while also.

I've lost track of him since then.

I actually have an old 8 track tape with John St John on it! I found it at a junk store and on the label it had "radio stuff" handwritten on it. I mainly bought the thing for parts to fix a couple of my other 8 tracks. Out of curiosity I listened to this thing and it was taped off Knoxville radio. It's got a little bit of everything, songs, station ID's....WIMZ is on there, U-102, WOKI, 97.5 WEZK....pretty cool old tape! The sound quality is pretty good too. From the music, I am guessing this thing was from the early 1980's. But, anyway, John St John is on there. He gives the time which as 3:20 and talks about what they had just played. WIMZ called themselves Rock 104 and must have had a downtown studio because the DJ talks about what a nice day it is as he looks down over downtown Knoxville. WEZK sounded automated because I heard no voices on there at all. It sure did bring back alot of memories!

WIMZ studios used to be in the Fort Hill building on Summitt Hill.

I used to listen to Brother John when living in Lexington, KY. Before the FM band became cluttered it was possible to hear WOKI. I seem to remember WOKI aired a disclaimer before his show. It was something along the lines of, "The following program may contain material that might be objectionable." He "borrowed" material from WLS, but what the hell it was fun listening.

A good source tells me as for BJSJ
All is well and happy in the world tonight...sleep tight.

The 80's was the right time for Brother John. WOKI had it all together and every hour was crazier
and crazier. It's like the cool old amusement parks we loved as kids...no one wants to play anymore.

Jaynes in Chattanooga o Decatur IL?

There was a recent rumor that Roy Jaynes was heard in Chattanooga filling in on SKZ. I do not see any of his previous AKAs on their website BUT Joyne Radio, who just bought a bunch of Decatur IL
stations from Archway has had opening posted in AA for all those stations and various positions.

I go to All Access to get contact info on Joyner and see ROY JAYNES listed as PD of DZQ. Same??

Roy is no longer in Decatur, IL. He was doing imaging and on air fill in at KZ106 in Chattanooga under the name Brother John. Rumor has it he'll be at the helm of another Chattanooga station very soon.

I worked with Roy about 8 years ago when he was using the name Cadillac Jack. He's a great programmer for sure. We enjoyed incredible numbers under his watch.

Mike ---

Are you saying that this is THE same Brother John, formerly of the old WOKI now working in Chattanooga now???

Pretty amazing!

Hey Tibbs,

If the Brother John from WOKI was Roy Jaynes then yes...that's him. I was told that's the name he used at WOKI many moons ago.

He programmed WKXJ for several years and took it top 5 with a crap signal, and had WALV in Cleveland, TN pulling close to a 20 share in Bradley County beating US-101 in Bradley County for the first time ever.

I think Brother John is 54 now...I'm not all that far behind him.

It's the same Roy Jaynes/Brother John. I worked with Roy at three different stations in three different decades in more than one state. He had a nice little run in Chattanooga, and an even better run in Albuquerque. But for much of his career he always lusted after the job he didn't have. As soon as he got it, he wanted to go back or go to the next one because management was never in tune with what he wanted to do. I'm afraid corporate radio has chewed him up and spit him out. I hope he does well in Chattanooga. He still has a daughter in Knoxville.

I vividly remember the first and only time I saw Brother John in person. Back in the "Boogie Check" days at WOKI,
originating from the second floor at Tulsa Road. WOKI FM100 was still playing music on gray fidelipacs in the triple deckers while Brother John was taking calls, recording them on the rack mounted ITC reel to reel deck and picking the best calls for playback. The night I was there, a female caller asked if she could rub his pet "white mouse"....Howard Stern had nothing on Brother John's Boogie Check back in the early 80's. It might have been crazy, but a lot of people listened.

I can now say it...Brother John...Roy Jaynes...Cadillac Jack is back at Alive 105 and Jack FM (Brewer Broadcasting/Chattanooga as PD.

Had a great visit with Roy yesterday. I'm excited about his return.
