Brother Stair On WNSH-AM 1570

As many if not most of you know, WPEP-AM 1570 in Taunton, MA was blown up so WNSH-AM in Beverly, MA on the same frequency could boost its daytime power to 30,000 watts (the original plan was to go to 50,000 watts with a directional antenna, but the owner settled for the 30K signal NDA). And how has that worked out? At least Monday morning (03/01) WNSH became the outlet for Brother Stair's really weird (even for "religious") monolog from 9:00 am until noon. (I only caught it because Stephanie Miller doesn't start on WWZN-AM 1510 untill 10 o'clock. Thus I was spinning the dial, literally because I wwas using an old table radio. I switched to WNSH during every Steph break, and that old coot was fulminating against the Catholic Church and President Obama, the latter for being a Freemason. Great use of a frequency! I wonder if this will be an everyday occurrence, as long as The Rev's checks clear. and I wonder if WRKO put the hammer down to prevent WNSH from airing the equally wacky Laura Ingraham.

Some FCC "policy makers" are talking about killing off over-the-air TV a few years down the road, to make way for other bandwidth uses, because now only 10% of people depend upon over-the-air TV stations. And some industry analysts are saying the maybe AM radio could be next. If AM radio generally airs programs like Stair's, then the answer to whether AM radio may go extinct (or condensed) for other uses of the spectrum... is 'yes'.

Some of the spectrum used by TV channels would work very well for some other purposes.

But what other use would desire to have the spectrum occupied by AM radio? If the FCC offered the clear out the forest of transmitters and towers and sell the AM spectrum to you.... what would you do with it?

I am not a fan of Brother Stair. But if you want to see the fur start flying set up a group that has the goal of removing Stair and his ilk from the airwaves. The last I heard, there has not been another campaign that ever brought more mail and grief to the FCC than the rumor a little over 40 years ago that claimed the FCC was giving consideration to a request from Madelyn Murray O'Hare to remove all religious programming from broadcasting. It hasn't been too many months since I least heard a preacher begging his listeners to write to the FCC and protest this proposed action.

It will take a very strong politician to ever touch that "electric third rail".

Yup he was on today...I am 1 mi. down the rd from WNSH's stick and they pop up not just on 1570 but on a
couple other spots on my clock radio dial. You can put on RKO, go back a bit and get WFAN then a little more left and NSH comes in...Stair

He got his 30 kW because an unbuilt Construction Permit for a new station on 1580 near Framingham with 1 kW days and 250 watts expired and was deleted by the FCC.

Today (Tuesday 03/02), WNSH broadcast chunks of uinmodulated carrier mid-morning, then finally picked up Laura Ingraham, then more dead air around the half-hour news feed from TRN...finally going back to "normal" in the 11:00 am to noon hour. Maybe they were set up for the Brother Stair feed, but he wasn't there (raptured by any chance?), causing the technical snafus.

After some rough weather, and lots of electricity stops and starts, our two Starguide receivers fell silent. Until we could reboot them, we turned on our Barix box and settled for some religious show. The Starguides are back for now, and Brother Stair is wherever he chooses to be, but not on WNSH. I will report to you the instant I hear more news of dear Brother, apologies for a rude show, and thanks for listening...

I wouldn't go so far as to call it a "rude" broadcast - maybe not enough for the FCC to bat an eye - but, hey, that's technology!
