Broward County won't deal with WIOD

Broward County (Fla) won't deal with WIOD for emergency weather broadcasts because the station carries Rush and Hannity.

Broward may cancel deal with radio station because it airs Rush Limbaugh
Rush Limbaugh has long been a thorn in the side of liberals, but now, because of him, some Democratic politicians don't even want to join with a local radio station to broadcast hurricane information.

Radio station WIOD, AM 610, has been the official channel for emergency information from Broward County government for the past year. The County Commission, all Democrats, balked at renewing the deal Tuesday, unable to stomach the station also being home to Limbaugh's talk show.

"They have every right to speak, but we don't have to do business with them," Commissioner Stacy Ritter said.

Right wing listeners would like to know about hurricane warnings also.

And WIOD is the biggest stick in the area, where everyone, left, right and center alike would tune to hear emergency weather conditions and/or warnings.

Well it looks like the county commissioners have changed their minds. Of course this
never should have been an issue to begin with. Where's the freedom of speech the
liberals like to talk about? Where's the caring for their constituents, both blue and red?
Why aren't they practicing fairness that they want to push upon everyone?
The bottom line is/was wether or not this station had the best coverage of the county
and if they would do what they were contracted to do. Leave the politics out of it.

And my last question: This became a national issue. why then was it moved to the
Miami board? Could it be a bit of liberalism on the part of the managing board op? or
could it be as Carlos likes to say... Dee Dee Dee.

Sorry Stu but... WRONG! It became a national issue. It was talked about
on NATIONAL radio shows, and on smaller local radio shows from coast to coast
(which is where I heard it here in Ohio) as well as being reported on many online news
sources both liberal and conservative.
And considering that much of what I read online shows up in the local newspaper the
nest day or so it will probably be there as well.

Boy do we in Broward look stupid to the rest of the world......and Palm Beach couldn't count in 2000.....YEESH.

You know, if the county wants to continue their idiocy, they COULD contact Piper High School about tapping into WKPX 88.5; it's a lightbulb class A with 3kw on a 100ft tower at Piper but I hear the station everywhere from the Dade-Broward line to Delray Beach..........throw the stereo pilot and you're in good shape. Whether NSU uses it or not, it could be Broward County's EAS/Emergency station.

Didn't I read somewhere that the commissioners were afraid that if they didn't take preemptive measures like linking a deal with WIOD that they were afraid WIOD would cover Miami and not this area?

Whether read somewhere or not, it's a cold hard fact. It's true.

Broward County has had to fight to get any kid of information out to its residents for years! Apparently we're still not part of the South Florida community yet, eh?

I have very fond (ugh) memories of watching Metro-Dade County briefings as a child before and after Andrew in '92, and then the Erin scare in '95, and they gave a nod to us north of County Line Road and 'friendly advice' to do as people in their county were doing to prepare.

Only within the last 7-8 years, you actually see Broward County holding press conferences and briefings.

Even after Wilma, the attitude on TV and radio was "...ok, Broward's got this, that and the other thing. Who cares. Now to MIAMI BEACH."

Anyone disagree with this?

Once upon a time a long time ago, before Mystic 1400, before Hot Talk, before Florida's Talk Leader there was a little station that was the WIOD of Broward, this was in the '50's, 60's and '70's. It was WFTL 1400 with a LARGE news department degvoted to covering BROWARD. WFTL did it far better than WIOD could because they didn't have to worry about covering Dade.

In fact the Broward classroom teachers were told to listen to WFTL. The teachers unions said WFTL will tell you of we are going on strike. If it was news in Broward, WFTL was on it back then.

In those days there were separate ARB's for Dade and Broward. Little (in watts only) WFTL couldn't compete when the combined book became the norm, that's what killed "The News Voice of Broward".

It was a small station that didn't think small.

Yes, I agree. With respect to the current WFTL I'm sure it's nothing like WFTL 14. The staff at the old WFTL was amazing. Sales, News, and the air personalites made a terrific combination. I am honored to have been a small part of it. WFTL 14 was live and local 24/7 with a local news room that was staffed 16 hours a day. I swear some of the reporters went to sleep with their police scanners on!

Unfortunately, this is the same story in just about every radio market, especially smaller ones. There are no newsrooms with large staffs anymore (unless you are talking about NY, Chicago, LA.)

In fact, most stations have NO newsroom....or the news is done from a market miles away. WIOD's traffic at night and on the weekend is done out of Tampa.

Blame consolidation for all of it.

Totally 100 percent BS. Total Traffic and newscasts are produced in house (in WIOD newsroom). News has always comes from WIOD, 24/7. After CC dumped Metro, and before Miami's own Total Traffic was built out, some overnight and weekend reports were coming from Tampa, but has been all Miami for almost two years. Nice try, AM Rocks. How's that big all news Live 85 doing these days?...oh, sorry.

I think you missed his point, Faraway. The fact is that at some point, it was happening...and happening everywhere. Metro was doing Atlanta news from Miami. Alabama and South Carolina Clear Channel news was coming from Atlanta. Voice tracking in multiple markets by one person in Cleveland. And yes, it's consolidation's fault. And it all means fewer and more lower paying jobs in the industry.
