Browns on WMMS 1968 to 1984 ?

Looking for verification that the Browns aired at any time on WMMS from 1968 to 1984 (w/ AM sister WHK). The only reliable info I can find is in Mike Olszewski's book "Radio Daze" which includes passing references to WMMS simulcasting Browns games with WHK during the MetroMedia years (1968-72). Note that WHK was the Browns flagship from 1968 to 1984.

Beacon Journal writer Bob Dyer wrote an article in 1991 ("Browns, Buzzards to Share Air" 2/9/91) about WMMS and WHK acquiring rights to the Browns for 3 seasons from 1991 to 1993. He states that prior to 1991, WMMS "never aired sports broadcasts of any kind" and that WHK "aired Browns games years ago".

I can verify that the Browns aired on WMMS from 1991 to 1993 (3 seasons w/ AM sister WHK). I can also verify that the Browns have aired on WMMS since 2002 with AM sister WTAM. That's it. If anyone has any information to refute Dyer's article, please share.

Thank you.

I could be 100% wrong here, but I do not recall MMS broadcasting any type of sports until later on, would have been late 1970's at the very earliest, if not the 1980's sometime when I lived away from Cleveland. Definitely not during their earliest pre-Buzzard era 1968-69, doing anything "establishment" at the time would have been a no-no for them, they were completely counter-culture, at least in their programming style. I don't think they would have aired any sports in their early Buzzard days either. However they may have in the approx. 1970-72 period when they were Top 40, adult standards, or I even think country for a bit. I wasn't a sports fan back then so if sports was on, I had a music station on instead. Again, I could be wrong, but this is my recollection.

The Browns or sports play-by-play never aired on WMMS post 1968 until the deal in the 1990s.

Way, way back in the 1940s, WHK-FM (WMMS' predecessor) reportedly broadcast some play-by-play separate from the AM (you would have to go to the library and check the PD radio listings from the newspapers of the day) and it is conceivable that during the WHK AM & FM simulcast days of the 40s, 50s and early-to-mid 60s) the FM carried whatever was on the AM, which may have included just about anything, including Mutual network stuff.

But by the time they switched to WMMS in 1968, the FM was 100% stand-alone.

Just quickly searching through the Plain Dealer Archives I found an Indians at Washington Senators game aired August 21, 1946 from about 8:30-11PM on Experimental W8XUB-107.1-Which was known as "WHK's FM station"-Indians lost 4-3..

W8XUB became WHKX in November 1947 and moved to 100.7 FM , WHK-FM in November 1948 and WMMS September 28, 1968..

Thank you for your input. Again, I'm looking for verification that the Browns aired at any time on WMMS from 1968 to 1984 (i.e., after dropping WHK-FM callsign). Not Browns on WHK-FM or WHKX or W8XUB. Not Indians on WHK-FM or WHKX or W8XUB. I'm only looking for information on the Browns airing on WMMS -- *with* the WMMS call letters -- at any time from 1968 to 1984. Nothing before 1968 or after 1984, and no team other than the Browns.

All I could find on my own is passing references in Mike Olszewski's book "Radio Daze". If you have any additional info on Browns on WMMS from 1968 to 1984, please share.

Thanks

I thought I was contributing to the whole conversation-Not just your question-Every Indication is that the Browns aired in 1967 on WERE, 1968-84 on WHK Only,1985-90 WWWE and 1991 back to WHK (with WMMS)..Hope that comes close to answering your question..

Tim L- I apologize. I assumed everyone involved in this topic was replying directly to me (for what it's worth, my previous post was not directed solely at you). Thanks for the Browns info.
