Brownwood, TX market info

Would anybody be able to provide me with information on Brownwood, TX. I have demos, what I am looking for are psychographics. What is the culture out there, the atmosphere, what are the people like?

Hey Sweep...
I was out there in November. That whole part of the world appears to be growing. Of course being that it is Central Texas you have to expect a large Hispanic Pop Count.

There is a lot of tourism out there... Comanche, Texas; Fredericksburg et al

Still a very large German ancestory out there as well.

One thing I like to do when I am looking at a community is read their paper for a few weeks... In Brownwood their paper is The Bulletin

Here is a link to their website

If I can help in any way, let me know

Has anyone ever worked for Watts Broadcasting? They owed several stations in Brownwood. Any comments?

Brownwood surprised me when I went through there several times. It is actually growing, so there must be some industry. It is one of those towns located at the intersection of several highways, so a lot of business comes from people driving through town. I wouldn't call it "tourism", just mainly a rest stop. They have several of the chain restaurants including Chilis, a Super Walmart, etc.

Growing up in a smaller West Texas city, I can tell you that there is (or at least used to be) a lot of DX. I observed several deep fringe antennas aimed at Dallas, mainly TV, but there were some FM, too. These days with satellite and broadband, I bet a lot of folks are listening that way.

I would think a LP-FM rebroadcast of a Dallas station would do well there - announcing ads for local businesses to travellers on the highways, and to locals who probably know every new business opening anyway, but reminders might draw them in. The whole town is just a few miles across, so a strategically placed LPFM on Hwy 67 would probably reach the whole town.

Brownwood may be the kind of place where LPFM would be quite successful. I'm surprised that nobody applied for one when there was an opportunity. By law, LPFM's aren't allowed to rebroadcast the signal of a full power station, and they can't run commercials. They can subscribe to a "network" and they can run "enhanced underwriting" announcements which can support a small station.

Rather than rebroadcast what somebody else is already doing, how about doing something local and original? That's what LPFM was supposed to do. A few stations have been quite successful doing that. Sadly, most haven't even bothered. With the technology that is easily and cheaply available, it isn't impossible to run a truly unique local radio station.

Maybe someone will apply for such a station, when and if the FCC ever has another LPFM Filing Window.

...or you can build your own full power FM -- there's currently a CP for sale that would serve Brownwood -- they're asking $ 400,000 for the CP.

Just FYI: Brownwood is already served by 5 commercials FMs, 2 non-comm FMs and 2 AM's.
