Bruce Glasier retiring from WCSH

The longtime sportscaster at Gannett's ratings colossus will step down for good in April. The linked feature on this weekend's "Bill Green's Maine" is decidedly bittersweet; it documents, perhaps unwittingly, the rise and fall of WCSH's sports coverage over the years. These days the flagship 6PM weekday newscast occasionally has no sports segment at all - not even a perfunctory reading of scores by the news anchors - something that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. The era of "Video Sports' and "Sports Overtime" has become a distant memory, and in a few weeks, so will Glasier.

Watching that video package was fun! I still vividly remember Sports Overtime like it was yesterday! I lived in Old Orchard Beach from 1985 to 1987 and watched it every week. He mentioned that he's been at WCSH-TV for 35 years! Wow! My favorite picture, which they showed, was when he met Muhammad Ali. It may have been when Ali appeared there sometime in the 1990s. I know he had a bout against Sonny Liston once in Lewiston. As for WCSH-TV now, I can't see Bill Green being there too much longer, either.

Bill Green just celebrated his 40th anniversary with WLBZ/WCSH, and there are fewer new episodes of "Bill Green's Maine" being produced (probably realistic given the increasing marginalization of Saturday prime access.) Still, I think he'll stay there as long as he wants to be around.
