Bruce Jacobs fired

Well you got the smarmy part right. Young's one trick pony act got old about 22 years ago. But he fits in nicely with a motley crew whose orbits never collide with facts or reason. It's like watching the Titanic of radio slowly sink into obscurity.

You are so edgy

Unless Cheap Channel backs up a money truck to Pratt's front door and massively front-loads ('cos, y'know, possible bankruptcy looming) a contract bigger and longer than the one he's riding out now, he ain't doin' nothin' but maybe an (unpaid) regular drop-in guest spot -- and that only if he gets the itch real bad. He has writing and family and charity work to keep him as busy as he wants to be, thank you.

As for Broomhead, NT has him pegged as purely a stopgap until a "permanent" replacement can be brought in. But, who? Tom Liddy would seem the most logical local guy, but he desperately needs a co-host (which costs bucks, which CC don't wanna spend). There aren't any prominent syndie hosts whose schedule fits the 5-8a gap (although Ingraham could fit 6-8a for a few months with WSJTM going to a full hour at 5a, but even that would have to be tossed by November). Move JD to AM drive leaving the station with its pick of just about every national show -- live or delayed -- for afternoon drive? Seems the best option, but only if JD is receptive.

me thinks it was his e-mails that did him in. he was already on thin footing over the officers' wifes blurb. maybe the new mexican wal-mart will work out for him.

Guess 55/FYI didn't want to lose a current ad schedule, especially
in this economy--just heard one of those "talent testimonial" spots,
voiced by...Bruce Jacobs.

It takes a while to get old commercials out of the loop.

I remember Brother John Dayl doing ads after he died.

DR AKBAR, THIS IS ALL YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Haha, don't tell that insidethenumbers fool or he'll spin some kind of tale that they have to post the job for EEOC regulations or something to the effect that Pratt turned it down at the last minute, blah blah blah... Games up.

Hey Nik.... You don't think insidethenumbers has credibility? He's been following Dave Pratt his entire life. He knows when Pratt goes to bed. He knows how long Pratt microwaves his popcorn for. He can tell you the exact PSI in the left rear tire of Dave Pratt's vehicles. And let's not forget, he's met him 2 (two) times.

I'm not an ordinary duck. I know this because I never could appreciate Bruce Jacobs. Every time I turned on 550, the guy said something rude or offensive. I don't know, maybe it was just bad luck.

A while back someone here characterized him as being so funny. I couldn't believe it. But, that's just me. He had good ratings, as did Rush, Hannity, and the like. Although I grew up American, KFYI has pushed me into feeling like a foreigner in this land.

well there is always Jack Cole. He would cough so hard his lungs would fly out in mid sentence.

About a year ago. I sure do miss the phlegmatic John Dayl.

I had never heard of him until KFNX turned into something listenable for a short period. I did enjoy his straight shooting style... I can still hear him doing the half-price books and chinese food buffet spots "My favorite is the egg foo yong"

Sad to hear he is gone. :-[

If you search back far enough, there is a rather large thread about the death of John Dayl. KFNX did 2 nights of tributes to Brother John, it was really nice to hear.

It's a new era in the radio business; ratings are secondary to bean counters and cost cutting. If anyone believes that the firing of Bruce Jacobs was a performance based firing then I have some swampland in Yuma to sell you. Clear Channel has tremendous pressure to cut costs and one of the ways to do so is to make some big sacrifices--some of those include on-air talent. It would be incredibly difficult to justify firing Barry Young or even JD Hayworth, but it's easier to justify the hefty contract of Bruce especially when you consider that his contract was up in August and he has hit most of the ratings incentives in it time-and-again. (While I don't know the precise numbers within the contract, I know that Bruce would have commanded some pretty big dollars so Clear Channel didn't want to shell out those bucks).

What a terrible decision on the part of KFYI. I have nothing against Mike Broomhead per se and apparently he's nothing more than a stop-gap until a new replacement is found (one of the worst positions to be in), but I am just not intrigued by his show, it's very typical talk radio with the typical KTAR-style formula, short monologue, throw out question, have callers regurgitate response to said question/topic, yawn.

I would hate for the market to lose Bruce permanently and I know he'll continue to do work for Fox Sports Radio, however I really hope he does have a local show of some type in the market--sports, news/talk, whatever. While many people on this board don't like him, I think it's for that reason that I especially route for him his success. 15 years in valley radio ain't bad, most of the time with very good ratings--and even in the era of being at 1-on-1 sports, he still did quite well nationally, but couldn't fit to the standard set by the brass upstairs. In any event, I wish Bruce the most success possible and hope to hear him again soon.

This thread is fascinating. Some of the comments here have really reaffirmed that the word "talent" has undergone significant degradation just as has the broadcasting business (can't use the words "industry" or "profession" to describe it since neither are accurate). Also reaffirms that dementia isn't solely restricted to old folks.
