Bruce Jacobs Walks Away from XTRA 910

Bruce Jacobs announced that this Friday afternoon's edition of "Game On with Jacobs and Marotta" would be his last. His announcement came after nine full months of hosting afternoon's on Xtra (8 of which were with Vince Marotta). Bruce said the announcement came as a result of wanting to have more time for his personal life, "I'm tired of working 19 or 20 hour days".

"I don't want to cheat the audience, or Vinnie", he said, "this show requires someone that can put in a full-time effort."

Jacobs will continue to host his morning show on KFYI and will occasionally be heard on Xtra 910 as a fill-in host for Fox Sports Radio.

Bruce brings something intangible to radio--in spite of what many critics here may think--he brings passion for whatever he talks about, honesty and a raw, unpolished style with a good track record of high ratings. I've always enjoyed Bruce as a sports talk/show host--even more than political talk. Looks like the Arizona Republic, Janet and the Democrats won't be off the hook anytime soon.

Meantime, Jeff Dean the current host of the X-Factor (heard 1p-3p) on Xtra will now Join Vince in the afternoon. Dan Patrick (ugh) will now be on from 1-3pm, or so the rumor goes.

I like Bruce as a sports host.

As a political/news talk guy, he's out of his element and is the "Archie Bunker" of Phoenix talk radio…

To me, it just won't be "Game On" without Jacobs. We got spoiled for almost a year. Something had to give, the guy was exausted. I agree he shines brighter on sports.

Maybe there's a return to sports broadcasting for ol' JD Hayworth.

There is a reason Archie Bunker was so popular, he was a regular guy. Bruce has a sense of humor about himself and he's fun. Often, he's dead on, too. Better an Archie Bunker than a Ted Baxter.

Are you people all clueless? Bruce Jacobs left XTRA 910 because the station tanked with him on it. He went on XTRA talking about how KTAR was a bunch of pansies and how he was going to kick Gambo & Ash's a**es.

Nine months later he has to leave because the station is no longer rated.

It hasn't shown up in the ratings in two months.

Bruce Jacob didn't walk away. He was forced to leave because his sports show completely failed. It was a disaster with a 0.0 share. His line about wanting to have more "personal time" is a load of s***.

He was as successful in sports talk as Dennis Green was in coaching. Tell it like it is.

Are you saying that Gambo & Ash are who we THOUGHT they were? ;D

I thought Bruce would give Gambo and Ash a run. I'm surprised his ratings haven't been that good.

Really... when he left ESPN, he said he was going into some internet venture. I can't remember the name, but they were going to provide internet sports content (webcasts, podcasts, etc.), IIRC.

Guess if he's really going to Fox Sports, it must not have panned out.

Bitter, party of one.

It's always odd when people make claims on internet message boards that they cannot possibly back up with substantive evidence. I suppose this makes you feel superior, although I am curious what time your show is on and what your credentials are.

I decided to go back into the books and take a long look; it seems that Bruce has a lengthy track record of success in sports-talk radio and basing his most recent performance on less than nine months on the air proves you know very little about 1) radio and 2) how ratings are gathered and audiences are built.

Personally, I think it's rather noble that someone would walk away from a job rather than mail it in like MOST other hosts in this valley have. If you have any proof of your claim though, I'd love to hear it--which means we won't be hearing from you anytime soon. Good day.

BMX:

1. Did Jacobs lose to Gambo & Ash in every trend and book?

2. Is it true that Jacobs is so low rated that he had a 0.0 in the last two trends

I can understand why Bruce wanted to leave; it must have been long days. Plus with his weekend gig on FSR he had no real time to himself.

I met Bruce when he took over the 2-4 p.m. slot on KFYI. I went to a Smackdown (remember those?) and wished him good luck. When he moved to mornings I used to listen a lot then I got tired of his rants against liberals and democrats.

I personally like him better doing sports. But if I had to choose one job (sports or talk), I would have done what he did.

This guy does good under any format. From what I heard, sounds like he is human and he dosent feel he can give 100% to his partner, his audience, and his girlfriend. What's so hard to believe?

Charles "CHucky" Goyette said that Jacobs and Barry Young were actually liberals, that became conservative to make it on talk radio.

So did he, but he couldn't keep up the act. If Bruce and Barry were posing-then the're both great actors!

I don't think that's true about Charles. I believe Goyette used to say on his KFYI show that he was a Goldwater Republican and volunteered/worked for AuH2O back in the day.

I was being facetious. Charles wrote an article once stating (essentially) that his career in Az had been jeopardized
by differences with his conservative co-workers over his more liberal views when (it was said at the time) that his ratings were actually to blame.

Fixed that for you.
