Bruce Kelly dropped as morning host at WMXJ

After stepping into some huge shoes in his attempt to replace Rick Shaw as Majic morning show host, Bruce Kelly was shown the door after his final show on Friday (4/25). Joe Johnson will fill in temporarily as Majic's search for a replacement commences.

Look for Dean Goss out of San Francisco or Bill Gardner from Phoenix to battle for it.

A girlfriend of mine who's pretty close to Doc Reno tells me his 6 month non-compete ends May 14th.

I don't know Bruce Kelly or what kind off job he was doing but I don't think they gave him enough time.

Rick Shaw is a big name in South Florida radio, we all know this. Yet I don't think he was doing much due to the confines of the format. The only other big name from that era that had an impact would be Mike Harvey (of WFUN fame). Your thoughts?

i would put ron parker in mornings. he just got the highest numbers on cbs-fm this past few months.

This remidns me of when Dan Taylor replaced retiring NYC AM Drive legend Harry Harrison on WCBS FM. Taylor was the choice of longtime PD Joe McCoy. A year and a half later a new PD Dave Logan took Taylor off mornigs eventually replacing him with Ex Monkee Micky Dolenz who lasted 6 mounths untill the the station fliped to Jack. When the station fliped back to Oldies in July 2007 PD Brian Thomas put Dan Taylor back in AM drive and he seems to be doing very well.

With all due respect to Micky Dolenz it just goes to show that not everyone in show business has what it takes to host a radio show. The skills are a little different.

I'm almost all over the map emotion wise about what happened here. I live outside the S Fla listening area but occasionally I would listen to Bruce and Majic via streaming. I remember both well when I used to live in Broward County.

Now let me explain a little about having lots of different type emotions here.

When Bruce joined Majic, I really liked what I was hearing. It was obvious to me that the guy was from old school in that he did his homework and prepared for his show. Current topics were often discussed with humor, the show seemed to have direction, and the features such as 45 Fridays, "Stupid Bruce Triva" contests and their remote broadcasts (even in England) were pretty entertaining. I thought the chemistry between Bruce and sidekick Donna Davis was real and that's critical to a morning show.

I was rather surprised to see Majic's numbers not go up with the addition of Bruce to the talent lineup. But then it always comes down to numbers and how the audience reacts to you in relation to the programming.

But then another type of emotion took over as I realized Bruce may have become the sqaure peg in the round hole. I'm no expert but maybe Bruce was expected to draw in younger demos and grow that audience. Certainly I think he has what it takes to do it. But often I'd hear a real good clever bit even someone in their 30s would dig but when Tom Jones or the Supremes would follow, I just imagined tune out.

I think it just came down to Bruce trying to appeal to an audience that just didn't favor a lot of the music. He started sounding like a duck out of water. But I give him tons of credit. I think he did a great job and I'm sure he will have a chance to shine in his next gig.

Bruce, I really like the kind of radio you do. Thanks and I wish you the very best!

In typical radio form, Bruce got screwed. You can not bring someone in to fill the shoes of Rick Shaw and expect people to accept it overnight. You can not expect a virtually new morning show to bowl everyone over IF YOU DO NOT DO YOUR JOB AS OWNERSHIP TO PROMOTE IT. No TV, No Billboards & No Print Media to sell the product.

Bruce was never given the tools to do his craft properly. For what he was given, he did well. It is just the die hard Rick Shaw fans who couldn't let Rick go and never gave Bruce a chance. I'm sure they figured when Rick left, Bruce would be just like him. They don't understand when a main character leaves and new blood comes in, it is a whole new ballgame.

Lincoln Financial screwed the pooch on this one. Joe Johnson will do mornings until they get a replacement, and who knows how long that will be. No disrespect to Joe, but he is not a morning man. He'll be doing the basics, going through the motions and maintaining a morning show, but i'm sure that is it. LF won't do much outside of that so people don't get used to his routine just to end it when the next person comes through the door and starts a whole new morning show.

It reminds me of when Dan Marino "retired" from the Miami Dolphins...they've gone through numerous QBs and still have yet to hit pay dirt. The only difference is that H. Wayne opened his checkbook while Lincoln Financial didn't finance Bruce Kellys morning show.

Don't worry about Bruce, he'll be fine. He is one few natural talents left in Radio. He'll be baaaaaaaaack....Majic ya blew this one.

Reminds me of the old adage:"You don't want to be the one who replaces the legend. You want to be the one who replaces the one who
replaces the legend." I first heard that as a kid when Vince Lombardi retired from the Packers. Then John Wooden left UCLA, and Cousin
Brucie left WABC. Has there ever been a success story succeeding an icon?

If he would have stayed at XM he would still have a job. But he decided to go to the communist side of FM radio again ;D

You guys mostly all assume that this outfit will spend some money on talent. I highly doubt it. Glen's Herald blog is also FULL of pro-Budell folk..Ya think he has anyone "jones-ing" for the job for HIM!

LOL!!!

Interesting that with all this talk of numbers, no one from Bruce to the posters here (or Radio-Info Editors which got it wrong as well) have really checked the numbers.

35+ Winter & Spring 2007 Rick was 7th
35+ over the last 2 months Bruce was 7th

35-64 Winter & Spring 2007 Rick was 6th
35-64 over the last 2 months Bruce was 7th and then 6th

25-54 Winter & Spring 2007 Rick was 15th and 14th
25-54 over the last 2 months Bruce was 14th and 15th

So, after the drop when Rick left, Bruce had regained the same ranking as Rick which had been a Miami Legend for years.

So much for him not having the numbers that Rick had.

Everybody seems to assume that the next SUPERSTAR will be a guy again....lol...heard different things!! Seems like Majic will try a different approach! Watch out...

Speaking of numbers... I'm hearing rumors that the new Miami book just dropped and Bruce Kelly kicked major butt in the mornings... Can anyone confirm?
