Bruno on 950 ESPN ?

I think the Tony Bruno show would be a good idea for 950 ESPN.

The show airs live from 7-10 PM on the West Coast...So that would be 10pm-1am here in Philly.

"The Locker Room" with Harry and Dan airs from 7-11. They can either pick up Brunos final 2 hours from 11-1am or cut the last hour off of "The Locker Room" and air all 3 hours of Bruno...Either would be fine with me.

Bruno is a Philly guy...but will his "National" show appeal to Philly ?

Taking off the 10p-11p final hour of "The Locker Room" isnt a bad idea...considering it's the worst sports talk show in Philly.

I would defly listen to Bruno over any HACK from 11-2am on WIP. Sorry but Mark Eckel, Rueben Frank and Rob Ellis are just awful.

Add this for food for thought...Bruno from 11-1 and and local overnights from 1-6 before Mike and Mike ?

It would seem, due to the deal to carry the ESPN brand, they have to carry a certain amount of ESPN Radio daily. Not sure about the deal with Content Factory, but they could strongarm WPEN to take BOTH Patrick AND Bruno. One would think the ESPN wording is stricter.

I doubt ESPN can control the nights and overnights. Most ESPN stations refuse to carry Tirico or the Cowherd shows and they are day-time programs. The Herd is only on smaller markets that seem to care about college crap more than pros and Tirico is never on his show, so how could they force PEN to carry their weak night/overnight shows when those 2 shows don't get cleared on even the stations ESPN owns? The question is what PEN does with Patrick AND Bruno.

Of course, I am making a gross assumption here, but ESPN could say "Hey, you NEED to carry a certain amount of hours of our programming so you can have access/license to the ESPN name". With all the local programming, Dan Patrick and the weekend in-house brokered shows, I am sure a few concessions had to be made (i.e. Tirico) to be allowed to call the station 950 ESPN. Speculation on my part, but I am sure not too far off the mark.

I will agree the bigger conundrum is what, if anything, PEN can do to accomodate BOTH TCF shows...

what a horrible idea. If you want a lame know it all, just get Rob Charry

PEN has to carry Tirico.

Dont you think it would make much more sense to have a local lead-in to Mike Missinelli (who FLIPPED OUT when he got hired and was told Tirico was his lead-in).

you guys seem to forget that ESPN PAYS 950 to be called ESPN so they didn't have to go out and buy a radio station for ridiculous millions. They have some say, but I guarantee they don't get the keys to the radio station for that check they write to Greater Media. I doubt they are forced to carry anything besides Mike and Mike(which they want because they are too cheap to pay for a local morning show) and maybe Tirico and the MLB and NBA packages to fill weekends.

If they are going to run syndicated programming at night, don't you think more people would listen to Bruno pimp the Philly teams than some nameless hack in Bristol who is happy to have a job so his frat buddies can hear him on ESPN?

ESPN "Affiliates" like 950 WPEN have to carry 3 things....

A. Mike & Mike (ESPN's Flagship Show)
B. Tirico & Van Pelt (They can air it from 1-3 or 1-4 or 1-2 or 2-3) at some time frame in the 1-4pm day that must air
C. Play by Play such as Football and Baseball (i.e., MNF, SNF, SNB, WS, NCAA BCS)

Other than that they have total freedom to go local.

@ radiohater

They have to carry Mike and Mike, but really, what other options do they have? Other then Bruno himself, what other morning show is going to work in Philly vs. Angelo and Co. (which is a lousy show, but lets face facts has an auidence that PEN isnt going to beat).

Save that morning show money and pump it into the other dayparts and into beat reports (I think PEN is kicking WIP's butt in Eagles coverage, Seltzer is WAY better then anything WIP has), quality update anchors (Both stations arent great, but WIP's guys been there forever and that builds credibility, the PEN kids sound so young) and as much local programming (Michael Bradley doesn't count...he is HORRENDOUS, does a human being really talk like this....DO the PHILLIES want TO win THE division OR do THEY want TO give IT to THE mets) as you can get.

Thats the problem I have with PEN, they are ESPN on the weekends WAY to much. In Philly, if you are ESPN national programming on weekends your dial is on 610 and if your dial is on 610 on Saturday and Sunday, chances are its going to stay there on Monday when you goto work.

PEN needs a good local weekend presence to keep the dial there on Monday.

I agree...PEN needs local programming on weekends from 8am-4pm/7pm...

Local overnights during the week would be great, especially leading into Mike and Mike.

I also agree that Michael Bradley is awful...he talks like he is on the radio, and thats not the goal..
You want to sound like your speaking naturally...at a sports bar or chattin with your buddies...

Updates though...I mean as long as they deliver the INFO, I could care less how young they sound.
But I am sure PEN has the best quality they can have...for updates...considering they probably pay them $9 per hour.

How about this for a NEW 950 ESPN Line-up....

6a-9a.. Mike and Mike
9a-1p.. Jody Mac
1p-3p.. Tirico and Van Pelt
3p-7p.. Mikey Miss
7p-11p.. The Locker Room with Harry and Dan
10p-1a.. Tony Bruno (Live from West Coast)
1a-5a...*** New LOCAL Overnight Show *** A Young guy with energy..not a newspaper guy

Weekends: LOCAL 8a-4p...Bradley on weekends ? Tollefson ? Some new young guys.

Love the line-up idea, but I doubt they can dump Dan Patrick to put Bruno on since his national ads are based on top 10 markets(despite the tape delay) and they both work for the same company. Running Bruno live makes the most sense, but that's not how this biz works anymore.

Rome does the Same thing. He's db'ed in a lot of cities but his sales people show he's "on" in those big markets when the show is dumped on late nite.
